Le premier livre du Dīgha Nikāya, le Recueil des longs discours du Bouddha, rassemble 17 suttas qui ne correspondent pas au format typique des discours, mais sont des regroupements créés des siècles plus tard réussissant à être classés comme un autre recueil canonique.
Alors que les suttas des recueils canoniques: Saṁyutta, Majjhima et Anguttara Nikayas, visent à expliquer la parole, la doctrine et l'enseignement du Bouddha ainsi qu'à fournir quelques données circonstancielles, ce livre, en revanche, est une compilation hétéroclite de diatribes contre les différentes croyances qui se heurtaient au bouddhisme naissant.
La diatribe, ou "débat", est le nom donné à un court discours éthique, plus particulièrement du type de ceux composés par les philosophes cyniques et stoïciens. Ces lectures morales populaires avaient souvent un ton polémique dirigé contre des individus ou des groupes sociaux. Dans ce cas, elles ne laissent aucune communauté, croyance, foi ou religion de l'époque non attaquée.
Ce livre semble avoir été composé pour être donné aux missionnaires bouddhistes afin qu'ils l'utilisent comme un manuel de débat contre les autres religions dans le but de gagner des adeptes. C'est le ton de la plupart des treize premiers discours. Ni la mythomanie ni le millénarisme, dont le public indien a toujours été si friand, ne sont dédaignés.
Si nous étudions leur structure, nous voyons immédiatement qu'ils sont complètement étrangers aux suttas canoniques et leur contenu, en général, est composé d'une diffamation contre un groupe religieux, suivie d'une série de courts collages de suttas canoniques sélectionnés sans grand critère.
DN 9. Avec Poṭṭhapāda, son auteur inconnu s'engage dans une série de pièges dialectiques jusqu'à un point où il se trouve incapable d'en sortir et le résout en compliquant encore plus tout pour que rien ne soit clair. Dans DN 13. Les trois savoirs, les brahmanes sont accusés des mêmes vices et défauts que les moines bouddhistes. Le reste des faux discours n'essaie pas d'imiter la structure régulière des suttas, ni la formulation ni le contenu, ce qui montre une faible connaissance de la part de leurs auteurs du reste des Nikayas.
Ils sont marqués d'un double astérisque (**).
Enfin, il est étrange que cette collection soit la plus populaire parmi les adeptes bouddhistes d'aujourd'hui.
Trois des quatre grands discours sont également rassemblés: le Mahapadana, le Mahanidana et le Mahaparinibbana.
Mais la tache de mensonge s'étend aussi à deux des grands discours: le Mahapadana, ou Grande Chronique des Bouddhas, qui est un pamphlet d'un baroque exagéré, excessif même pour le goût oriental, et le vaste Mahaparinibbana, qui n'est pas exempt de mensonges disséminés tout au long de son vaste écrit.
Au contraire, le Mahanidana, ou Grand Discours des Causes, est une compilation exhaustive de la théorie de l'Origine Dépendante en un seul texte, et le Mahasatipatthana, ou Grand Discours des Instructions de Pratique, fait de même avec différentes pratiques. Il ne les traite pas toutes, mais celles qu'il aborde le font en profondeur.
Ces deux discours à eux seuls font que ce livre vaut la peine d'être lu.
