Más que una novela, Paradiso, de José Lezama Lima, es un arte poético. Este libro narra la historia de una familia cubana en La Habana. Mientras que, a su vez, discurre sobre qué es la poesía, la literatura y la historia espiritual para Lezama Lima.

Paradiso sufrió el ataque y la censura de la crítica castrista que la acusó de ser una novela hermética, morbosa y pornográfica. La acusación señaló que el Capítulo VIII tenía escenas de sexo demasiado explícito.

Sin embargo, calificar a Paradiso (1966) solo como una novela pornográfica, resulta bastante injusto y no se corresponde con la magnitud de esta primera gran creación novelada de José Lezama Lima.

El interés de la obra no se reduce a la acción que interpretan los personajes. Hay también un lenguaje sugerente en el relato y profundos debates filosóficos y poéticos, que el narrador-autor esparce a lo largo de toda la obra.

En cuanto a género literario se refiera, Paradiso es una obra plural compuesta de novela, poema y ensayo.

La novela gira alrededor de tres ejes esenciales:


la familia,

el amor

y el concepto del arte como elemento salvador y redentor.

El argumento de la obra, la infancia y juventud de José Cemí, tiene una evidente raíz autobiográfica que origina y determina todo su desarrollo.

Paradiso es una laberíntica obra de arte, su lectura aturde a veces y lleva al desaliento. Sin embargo, algo tiene este libro de culto que hace que hasta sus pasajes más incomprensibles sean, a su vez, un misterio que nos imanta.

Sería deshonesto decir que es un libro fácil de leer. Sin embargo, los lectores de Paradiso no podemos resistirnos a la tentación de compartir este libro, una joya del barroco latinoamericano.

Al respecto, nos parece oportuno y alentador citar uno de los primeros y más entusiastas defensores de Paradiso, Julio Cortázar:


¿Por dónde saco la cabeza para respirar, frenético de ahogo, después de esta profunda natación de seiscientas diecisiete páginas?, se preguntaba Julio Cortázar. Leer a Lezama -continúa- es una de las tareas más arduas y con frecuencia más irritantes que puedan darse. La perseverancia que exige el maestro cubano es infrecuente, incluso entre especialistas.

Indicamos Según Lezama, siempre antes del pasaje en cuestión, cuando citamos apuntes del autor provenientes de sus cuadernos y otros escritos personales.
