Il presente lavoro è il risultato di due conferenze sui Libri del Duat, cioè l'Oltretomba egiziano, o "Altro mondo", che ho avuto l'onore di tenere alla Royal Institution nella primavera del 1904, ed è stato preparato su suggerimento di molti che desideravano continuare le loro indagini sulle credenze degli egiziani riguardo alla dimora dei defunti e allo stato dei beati e dei dannati. Lo scopo di tutti i Libri dell'Altro Mondo era di fornire ai morti una "Guida", o un "Manuale", che conteneva una descrizione delle regioni attraverso le quali le loro anime sarebbero dovute passare nel loro cammino verso il regno di Osiride, quella parte del cielo dove sorgeva il Sole, e avrebbe fornito loro le ''parole di potere'' e i ''nomi magici'' necessari per compiere un viaggio senza ostacoli da questo mondo alla dimora dei beati. Per un periodo di duemila anni nella storia dell'Egitto, i Libri dell'Altro Mondo consistettero solo di testi, ma intorno al 2500 a.C. gli artisti funerari iniziarono a rappresentare pittoricamente le caratteristiche principali del "Campo della Pace" o "Isola dei Beati", e prima della fine della XIX dinastia, circa 1300 anni dopo, tutti i principali libri relativi al Duat erano stati abbondantemente illustrati. Nelle loro copie, che furono dipinte sulle pareti delle tombe reali, ogni divisione del Duat fu disegnata e descritta chiaramente, e ogni porta, con tutti i suoi guardiani, fu raffigurata accuratamente. Sia i vivi che i morti avrebbero potuto imparare da essi, non solo i nomi, ma anche le forme di ogni dio, spirito, anima, ombra, demone e mostro che avrebbero probabilmente incontrato sulla loro strada, e i copiosi testi che venivano sempre affiancati alle immagini servivano per abilitare il viaggiatore nel cammino attraverso il Duat. Nei tempi primitivi, ogni grande città dell'Egitto ebbe una sua concezione dell'''Altro Mondo'' e, senza dubbio, i sacerdoti di ogni città fornirono agli adoratori dei loro dei delle "guide" adatte alla dimora dei propri morti. All'inizio del periodo dinastico, tuttavia, troviamo che il culto di Osiride era estremamente popolare, e quindi era naturale che un gran numero di persone in tutte le parti dell'Egitto sperasse e credesse che le loro anime dopo la morte sarebbero andate nel regno dell'Aldilà su cui regnava. Le credenze legate al culto di Osiride si svilupparono naturalmente dalle credenze degli egizi predinastici che, abbiamo tutte le ragioni di pensare, si occuparono in gran parte di magia sia "Nera" che "Bianca".
