About the Book

John Milton’s epic book Paradise Lost is hailed as one of his finest works, and vividly narrates the biblical story of mankind through Milton’s perspective, and describes Man’s disobedience to God and his subsequent fall from grace, resulting in paradise being lost as punishment for giving into the temptations created by Satan. Summary Of The Book Paradise Lost written in blank verse, is one of poetry’s finest masterpieces ever written and considered Milton’s major works. An epic biblical poem of staggering proportions, it is presented in twelve parts, and narrated from the perspective of the lead character Satan (Lucifer). Lucifer was one of God’s fallen angels who was banished from heaven and sent to hell for rebelling against God. In the book, he is considered the primary antagonist for Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God. The initial pages of Paradise Lost describe Satan as a once charismatic, and beautiful angel who was ousted from Heaven and cast into hell for his actions. When he hears of Man’s creation, he initiates a plan to seduce him and calls upon guidance from others including Chaos, who guides him to the newly created Adam and Eve. In the garden of Eden, Satan, who has disguised himself as a serpent, skillfully tricks Eve into eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Realising that Eve has sinned, Adam too knowingly follows suit, since he is committed to her and must accept the same punishment as her. When they realise what they have done, they seek the forgiveness of God. However, as punishment, they are cast out of Eden by him. God’s son Jesus, volunteers to die as punishment for their sins in order to redeem mankind. A first of its kind portrayal of the biblical story of Man’s fall from grace, Adam and Eve’s temptations created by Satan, and their subsequent expulsion from paradise, Milton’s Paradise Lost has been praised by fans, critics, and scholars of literature, as an unparalleled work of genius. About John Milton John Milton was a renowned scholar and English poet of the seventeenth century and a prominent literary figure in the Western world. His other major works include Samson Agonistes, Pastoral, Paradise Regained, and Areopagitica. Regarded as one of the finest non-dramatic poets of the Renaissance Period, Milton’s works are products of political and other burning issues of his time, and his deep convictions concerning freedom, including free speech, freedom of the press, and radical thought. He was born in 1608 to a wealthy family based in London. Well versed in foreign languages including Greek, Hebrew, and Latin, Milton earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree at Cambridge University. Thereafter, he dedicated himself to reading, writing, and self-study for a period of five years. Milton's first work, Lycidas, was published in 1632. His biblical epic poem Paradise Lost, was written in 1667. Having gone completely blind at the age of 43, he created a large part of his works during a period of acute ill health, as he laboriously dictated his works to secretaries who typed for him. John Milton died in 1674.
