La mirada interpretativa de este libro desafía a la tradición adventista y ofrece una postura no exenta de polémica. El autor cree que los cambios en doctrina deben realizarse, en servicio de la honestidad intelectual y de la búsqueda permanente de la verdad, y a la luz de hechos históricos comprobables.

El libro de Daniel se divide en dos partes. Los seis primeros capítulos narrados en tercera persona y escritos mayormente en lengua aramea (2:4b-7:28), contienen relatos para los creyentes que sufren persecución. Apartir del capítulo 8, Daniel relata en primera persona y en lengua hebrea. En estas visiones, los lectores primarios del libro no leyeron "profecía predictiva" referente a Babilonia, sino una interpretación teológica de la historia pasada, presente y futura. Los profetas no sólo anunciaban el porvenir sino principalmente hacían una lectura del pasado para explicar el presente a sus contemporáneos.

El Libro de Daniel no estaba entre los "Profetas" (Nebiim) en la Biblia judía sino en los "Escritos" (Jetubim) junto a los Salmos, Proverbios y libros sapienciales. Los primeros lectores de Daniel lo consideraban un libro inspirador para una vida fiel. Los hijos de Dios no están exentos de sufrir tribulaciones, angustias, agravios y persecuciones, de eso da testimonio el libro de Daniel.

El presente libro propone que las profecías de Daniel no tienen el propósito de bosquejar la historia del mundo desde los días del profeta hasta la segunda venida de Cristo, sino la suerte del pueblo de Daniel -los israelitas que fueron cautivos en Babilonia- en relación con sus opositores y perseguidores. El plan de Dios, tal como lo describen los profetas del Antiguo Testamento, era restaurar a Israel en aquellos tiempos y, bajo la condición de la fidelidad del pueblo israelita y sus dirigentes, comenzar un gobierno universal bajo la autoridad del Mesías largamente anunciado. Si el Mesías es Jesús (como creen los mesiánicos o cristianos) se encontró con un pueblo suyo mayormente incrédulo y con unos dirigentes políticos y religiosos corruptos. En consecuencia, las promesas del Libro de Daniel habrían de esperar hasta un tiempo indefinido para su cumplimiento, tiempo que sólo Dios sabe, según dijo Jesús.

Daniel quiso saber acerca de los tiempos: "¿Cuándo será el fin de estas cosas?" Daniel quería saber. Nosotros hoy queremos saber. Y algunos, como los cristianos del movimiento adventista norteamericano del siglo XIX, han hecho cálculos basándose en una interpretación de las cifras proféticas. Jesús dijo que "la abominación desoladora de la que habló Daniel" sería la acción realizada por el imperio Romano que destruiría a Jerusalén y el santuario en el año 70 d.C. (Mat. 24:15). Pero los cálculos basados en los 1.290 días de Daniel (literales o simbólicos) no dan como resultado el año 70 d.C. ¡Quedamos tan desconcertados como Daniel! O bien deberíamos quedar tan tranquilos como él, sabiendo que Dios es soberano para "mudar los tiempos y las edades" (Dan. 2:21). Somos bienaventurados si esperamos (Dan. 12:12). Somos bienaventurados si confiamos, como Daniel, en que nos levantaremos para recibir nuestra heredad al fin de los días (Dan. 12:13).
