Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Geschichte Europas - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 2,0, Technische Universität Dresden (Institut für Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Reich und Kirche im frühen und hohen Mittelalter, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem deutschen König Heinrich IV. und Papst Gregor VII. und dessen Höhepunkt, der "Gang nach Canossa", gehört gewiss zu den bekanntesten Ereignissen des Mittelalters. Immer wieder erhitzte er die Gemüter und regte zu Diskussionen an. Noch heute wird der Konflikt zwischen Gregor und Heinrich oft einfach als Investiturstreit bezeichnet. Doch welche Rolle spielte die Investiturfrage in der Auseinandersetzung bis Canossa tatsächlich? Weder Gregor VII., noch seine Vorgänger waren die Erfinder des so genannten Investiturproblems. Vielmehr begründete es sich in einer Idee, die seit den fünfziger Jahren des 11. Jahrhunderts immer mehr zum Tragen kam. Sie beinhaltete, dass die Verflechtung von geistlicher und weltlicher Rechtsphäre für die Kirchen ein untragbarer Zustand sei. Noch um die Jahrtausendwende hingegen, sah man darin nichts Verbotenes oder gar Anstößiges, denn jeder König bzw. Adlige war der Auffassung auf seinem Grund und Boden Kirchen errichten und bei der Bestellung ihrer Amtsinhaber mitwirken zu können. Vor allem in Burgund, der Normandie und der Bretagne waren es Herzöge und Grafen, die die Investitur betrieben. Eben diese Übertretung des Kirchenrechts, welches seit jeher jedoch deutlich zwischen Laien und Klerikern unterschieden hatte, rief den Widerstand religiöser Fundamentalisten hervor. Doch man muss an diesem Punkt der Entwicklung darauf verweisen, dass dieser Protest keineswegs von der breiten Masse getragen wurde. So stand Bischof Wazo von Lüttich noch relativ isoliert da, wenn er den prinzipiellen Vorrang des Priestertums vor dem Königtum beanspruchte.
