Sinopsis.

La historia nace en un pequeño poblado de Maguncia poco después de la muerte de Carlomagno (814). Johanna queda huérfana de madre en el parto y es abandonada por su padre haciéndose cargo de su educación, el monje del poblado. La erudición proporcionada por el monje no es la adecuada para una mujer joven del siglo IX, por lo que es enviada a un convento del cual escapa esperando llegar a Roma donde poder pasar desapercibida y dedicar su vida a la iglesia.

Durante el largo camino su suerte va cambiando para mal, y acabará tomando la identidad de un joven monje para poder viajar con mayor seguridad hasta Roma. Michel, un joven caballero que conoce en una de las aldeas que visita, será su acompañante en una travesía llena de peligros y dudas.

En Roma sus conocimientos sobre curaciones y su inteligencia la harán llegar hasta el Papa León, el cual la tendrá como persona de confianza siempre creyendo que se trata de un hombre. A la muerte del Papa se encuentra en la tesitura de ser elegida santo padre, sin embargo debe enfrentarse antes a un antipapa de nombre Anastasio. El pueblo y la Corte apoyan finalmente a Johanna, que accede a la silla de Pedro.

Presentación.

Ni Alain Boureau, ni Donna W. Cross, nos habían ofrecido una mirada al mito y leyenda de La Papisa Juana, desde una óptica tan cruda a la hora de nacer mujer en el medievo y dedicar la vida a la iglesia.

"Ni era de buena familia ni la iglesia le abrió las puertas de par en par", explica en su novela, Rafa Limones, (Lleida, 1972) . Muy al contrario de lo que hemos leído hasta hoy sobre la que es mito y leyenda para muchos, Juana, (Johanna para el autor), no disfruta de comodidades ni es recibida en Roma --llegando desde Grecia-- bien recomendada.

Johanna es abandonada al nacer por su padre, ya que su madre muere durante el parto. Su vida discurre en una aldea sin comodidades ni lujos, aunque con una biblioteca privilegiada por el paso de Carlomagno donde el padre Theodor, su mentor, la versará en el estudio y la lectura.

Será por esos conocimientos por los que su mentor la enviará a un convento del cual Johanna escapará, iniciándose así su camino a Roma, un trayecto nada propicio y lleno de peligros donde la joven conocerá a quien será su compañero de viaje, el noble Michel de Hoffenlars.

Envuelta en una apariencia masculina sufrirá los peligros de caballeros, monjes, y la Curia, hasta que al fin encaja en Roma, no sin dificultades.

Con esta novela, a la venta en dos volúmenes en su versión en papel y completa en la versión E-book, Limones hace su tercera incursión en la novela histórica después de, "La opción Wesser", ediciones Labnar (2017), y "La sangre de las rocas", publicada de forma independiente en 2019, sellando con ello un ciclo que va desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial, pasando por el "franquismo", y cerrando con "La Papisa", en la Edad Media.
