Il ne vit que dans ses livres, quand il ne peint pas ses rêves récurrents enfermé dans sa chambre.Ses cauchemars étranges sont probablement accentués par sa maladie et ses lectures répétitives - à ce qu'on lui dit. Passionné par les histoires de sorciers, il envoie un jour son manuscrit illustré racontant ses visions à la Grande Bibliothèque de Sylvestris Merlinus. Dans ce séminaire, on a coutume de former les apprentis magiciens à travers l'adoration du dieu Sha-ak.Quelle surprise quand ses parents reçoivent la réponse de l'Académie. Même si son manuscrit n'est pas encore accepté, l'ambition de Sam d'écrire le livre de magie le plus lu au monde, nécessite au moins qu'il vienne y étudier . Sans vraiment le vouloir, Sam est admis dans la plus prestigieuse école d'Enchanteurs. Mais ses parents semblent inquiets et réagissent comme s'ils avaient toujours redouté ce jour. Or personne n'imagine que son Haut Potentiel compense ses handicaps. Il se révèle être un étudiant imprévisible capable de rivaliser avec le Maître de la Peur lui-même.
À propos de l'oeuvre

Récit avec un fond autobiographique relatant l'histoire d'un enfant d'immigré dyslexique à l'allure de bohémien. Quand la passion de l'auteur pour Tolkien se mêle à un procédé cathartique, cela donne Pantophobia, l'histoire d'un garçon pantophobe qui rêve de devenir magicien.
Le héros Sam, traité de "bohémien" toute sa vie, apprend à dépasser le mauvais traitement des autres, à outrepasser son "autisme" pour aller vers les autres. Parti de loin à cause de tous ses handicaps, il prend goût aux défis et cela forge son caractère.
C'est une façon pour l'auteur de dénoncer une société cosmopolite où certaines minorités sont parfois marginalisées, humiliées dès l'entrée à l'école, ainsi que les dysfonctionnements d'un système scolaire "profané" par l'idéologisme et la non recherche d'excellence.
Mais en vérité, Pantophobia n'est qu'une métaphore qui traite de nombreux enjeux contemporains: la dyslexie, l'égalité des chances, la xénophobie, la maltraitance sur ses propres enfants, le harcèlement à l'école, le rapport à l'argent d'un père de famille, le vivre ensemble dans un ménage ou encore le Haut Potentiel. Le héros n'est plus un "élu" mais un dyslexique qui compense son handicap par son Haut Potentiel (qui n'est pas vraiment un don non plus en soi).
L'auteur déroule dans ce texte le fil de son combat personnel quotidien en vue de son intégration. De son enfance difficile jusqu'à la paix d'un foyer. Une vie "normale", gagnée de haute lutte. Pantophobia est avant tout une leçon de vie, un livre qui redonne foi en elle.
