O primeiro livro do Dīgha Nikāya, a Colecção dos Longos Discursos de Buda, recolhe 17 suttas que não se enquadram no formato típico dos discursos, mas são agrupamentos criados séculos mais tarde que conseguem ser classificados como outra colecção canónica.
Enquanto os suttas das colecções canónicas: Saṁyutta, Majjhima e Anguttara Nikayas, visam explicar a palavra, doutrina e ensino do Buda, bem como fornecer alguns dados circunstanciais, este livro, por outro lado, é uma compilação heterogénea de diatribes contra as diferentes crenças que colidiram com o budismo incipiente.
Diatribe, ou "debate", é o nome dado a um breve discurso ético, especificamente do tipo composto pelos filósofos cínicos e estóicos. Estas leituras morais populares tinham frequentemente um tom polémico dirigido contra indivíduos ou grupos sociais. Neste caso, não deixam nenhuma comunidade, crença, fé ou religião da época sem ser atacada.
Este livro parece ser composto para ser dado aos missionários budistas para ser usado como um manual de debate contra outras religiões, a fim de ganhar seguidores. Este é o tom da maioria dos primeiros treze discursos. Nem a mitomania nem a milagres, de que o público indiano sempre gostou tanto, são desdenhadas.
Se estudarmos a sua estrutura, vemos imediatamente que são completamente estranhos aos canónicos e que o seu conteúdo, em geral, é composto por uma calúnia contra um grupo religioso, seguida por uma série de suttas canónicas de pasta curta seleccionadas sem muito critério.
DN 9. com Poṭṭhapāda, o seu autor desconhecido entra numa série de armadilhas dialécticas até chegar a um ponto em que se vê impossibilitado de sair e o resolve complicando ainda mais tudo para que nada fique claro. Em DN 13. Os Três Conhecimentos, os Brahmins são culpados pelos mesmos vícios e defeitos que os monges budistas. O resto dos falsos discursos não tentam imitar a estrutura regular dos suttas e nem a redacção nem o conteúdo, o que mostra um curto conhecimento por parte dos seus autores do resto dos Nikayas.

Finalmente, é estranho que esta colecção seja a mais popular entre os seguidores budistas de hoje.
Três dos quatro grandes discursos são também recolhidos: o Mahapadana, o Mahanidana, e o Mahaparinibbana.
Mas a mancha da falsidade estende-se também através de dois dos grandes discursos: o Mahapadana, ou A Grande Crônica dos Budas, que é um panfleto de um exagerado barroco excessivo mesmo para o gosto oriental, e o extenso Mahaparinibbana, que não está livre de falsidades espalhadas pela sua extensa escrita.
Pelo contrário, o Mahanidana, ou Grande Discurso das Causas, é uma compilação exaustiva da teoria da Origem Dependente num único texto, e o Mahasatipatthana, ou Grande Discurso das Instruções de Prática, faz o mesmo com práticas diferentes. Não são todas elas, mas aquelas com as quais lida em profundidade, fazem-no em profundidade.
Só estes dois discursos fazem com que este livro valha a pena.
