So sollen im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit zunächst die journalistischen Grundlagen für ein erfolgreiches Paid-Content-Modell herausgestellt werden. Um herauszufinden, welche Eigenschaften für eine auf Paid Content ausgerichtete Berichterstattung notwendig sind, werden explizit die journalistische Qualität, die zeitliche Aktualität und die Exklusivität beleuchtet. Anschließend wird im zweiten Hauptteil der Fokus auf die technischen Möglichkeiten gelegt, die bestehen, um den rückläufigen Umsätzen im Printgeschäft mit den wachsenden Nachrichtenseiten im Netz entgegenzutreten. Die Funktionsweisen der verschiedenen Methoden zur Monetarisierung von redaktioneller Arbeit werden dabei sowohl auf ihre Umsetzbarkeit als auch auf mögliche Problematiken geprüft. Anhand von Praxisbeispielen zu den einzelnen Modellen - harte Bezahlschranke, Metered Model, Freemium Model und freiwillige Bezahlung - sollen die Ergebnisse der Arbeit besser veranschaulicht werden. Der negativen Auflagenentwicklung bei den deutschen Tageszeitungen stehen steigende Klickzahlen bei den dazugehörigen Online-Nachrichtenportalen gegenüber. Deutlich wird dies vor allem am Beispiel der Funke Medien NRW GmbH, welche die NRW-Titel des größten regionalen Zeitungsverlags Deutschlands, der Funke Mediengruppe, zusammenfasst. Während die Printzeitungen in den letzten fünf Jahren 28% der Auflage verloren und auf 0,58 Mio. verkaufte Exemplare zurückfielen, stieg die Anzahl der Besuche auf dem Online-Pendant DerWesten.de um 126% auf 17,6 Millionen Visits an.
