About the Author: I'm Dr. Stephanie Raye, though I was just plain "Stephanie Raye" when I competed in pageants over 20 years ago. Back then, I didn't really know what I'd signed up for, as entering pageants just wasn't something we did in my family. But I figured I could learn, so I thought through what I'd need to do to succeed-what it really meant to enter, compete, and win in a pageant. When the competition time came I won! I became Miss Arizona Petite 1988.
But a pageant is just the beginning. Something always comes next, and the skills you build in the pageant can help you with it.
What came next for me was choosing to continue my education. That included a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication (emphasizing interpersonal and intercultural communication in organizational settings) and a Masters and a Doctorate in Psychology (emphasizing social influence, organizations, family relationships and divorce, and health and wellness.) As if understanding those areas weren't enough, I also spent two years being trained and certified as a personal and professional life coach.
My early work background includes the "commercial" and "visual" side of the business world. I put myself through the early years of my college education doing work that included (but was not limited to): being a print, mannequin, and runway model, appearing in commercials, being a mobile disc jockey, and representing fashion photographers to ad agencies and fashion retailers to make bookings for editorial and commercial fashion shoots.
And since 1993, among other interesting things, I've taught and conducted research at one of the largest and most well-regarded traditional state universities in the U.S.A. There I've focused more on the behind-the-scenes knowledge and concerns of organizations including families and businesses. That is, I've studied and added to the body of knowledge that helps create understanding and skill building that leads to more successful employees, leaders, and citizens. Underpinning all that, I've also spent a lot of time studying and teaching about what makes overall successful and happy people, from modern scientific perspectives as well as from engaging classic texts from ancient to modern times.
