Als die reiche Amerikanerin Dora Bernstein mit ihrem unverheirateten 50-jahrigen Sohn Ben am 29. Juni 2001 die Stadt Iasi im postkommunistischen Rumanien besucht, ahnt die 33-jahrige SanzianaStipiuc nicht, dass dieser Tag ihr Leben fur immer verandern wird. Wegen ihrer Englischkenntnisse wird die Buchhalterin des Kaufhauses Moldova von ihrem Chef gebeten, sich der Gaste aus Ubersee anzunehmen: „Sanziana, heute kommst du nicht ins Buro, machst Außendienst“, beauftragt sie Herr Finkelstein. Wenig spater hat sie nicht nur ein Visum fur drei Monate Arbeit bei der Firma Bernstein Vintage Ltd. in Washington in der Tasche, sondern wird auch die Frau von Ben. Ihre Mentorin wird die strenge Dora, die in Suzy, wie sie nun genannt wird, erst Angst, spater noch viel bosere Gefuhle auslosen wird. „Wir verkaufen Geschichten.“ Gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann, Joe, hat Dora das Geschaft mit ubertragenen Waren in eine Goldgrube verwandelt. Neben Secondhand-Kleidern werden auch Altwaren aller Art angeboten. Von Joe lernt Suzy, dass „wir nicht Waren, sondern Geschichten verkaufen“. Niemand ist besser darin als sie. Auf Umwegen erfahrt Suzy, dass Dora rumanische Wurzeln hat. Schon in Iasi war ihr nicht entgangen, dass die uberschminkte und uberschmuckte Amerikanerin Ortsnamen aus den 1930er-Jahren kannte. Dora will aber nichts sagen, und von Joe erfahrt sie nur: „Bedenke, Suzy, du kannst dein Land nicht an den Schuhsohlen mitnehmen. Aber du sollst auch wissen, dass im Absatz immer etwas aufbewahrt wird.“ Parallel zur Geschichte der Familie Bernstein entfaltet Mihuleac in dem 2014 in Rumanien erschienenen Buch das Portrat der Familie Oxenberg, einer wohlhabenden judischen Burgerfamilie aus Iasi: „Das Haus der Oxenbergs, im Zentrum der Stadt gelegen, ist hochgeachtet und wird stark beneidet. ,Friede und Harmonie‘ stunde auf dem Familienwappen, hatte man denn eines.“ Mutter Roza hat Sprachen studiert und arbeitet an einer deutschsprachigen Anthologie rumanischer Erzahlungen, Vater Jacques wurde in Paris zu einem Pionier der Gynakologie und mehrt mit seiner Meisterschaft im Kaiserschnitt das ohnehin nicht schmale Familienvermogen. Doch immer mehr setzt der rabiate Antisemitismus der rumanischen Mitburger den Juden zu. Lang verschließen die Opfer die Augen und versuchen sogar, sich die Gunst der Tater zu erkaufen. Allein die Dummheit der Judenhasser lasst es unmoglich erscheinen, dass sie sich durchsetzen: „Werden sie auch noch behaupten, wir hatten mit rot lackierten Fingernageln den Bolschewiken heimlich Zeichen gegeben?“ Zugleich lauern bereits die eigenen Hausangestellten wie Bestien, die nur mehr von der Leine gelassen werden mussen. Genau dazu kommt es in dem Pogrom in Iasi am 29. Juni 1941, gleich nach dem Einmarsch Hitler-Deutschlands in der Sowjetunion. Die Ermordung der Juden in Iasi ubernehmen die Rumanen selbst, was jahrzehntelang geleugnet wurde. 13.266 Juden werden binnen weniger Stunden getotet. Die Schilderung Mihuleacs kennt außer vielleicht Bela Zsolts Roman „Neun Koffer“ nichts Vergleichbares.
