About the Book

What has happened to our food? It used to be so simple, but now we need a degree in human physiology just to do our weekly shop. Why is the nutritional information on a packet of biscuits more complicated than the user guide for an iPhone? Food manufacturers are concerned enough about the low nutritional worth of their products to put warning labels on them; so why not stop selling them all together? Emma, the lead character in Susan Kruegerșs book, rarely gives these questions a second thought. Today, however, she finds herself wrestling with a yearșs worth of food-related health scares in the space of one afternoon. She is left wondering if the entire food supply chain is dysfunctional, all the way from the field to the plate, and this is why she is overweight. Or perhaps, as some people are suggesting, the problem lies in the last 12 inches, between the plate and her mouth. Is it Emmașs fault alone she is piling on the pounds? This book provides a unique view of the problem we have with food today.

Six monthsș hard work went into organising this event. The Health and Nutrition Conference very much Emmașs baby. Even so, on the day, not everything goes to plan. Geoffrey wanders off topic; arable land destroyed producing food we donșt need. Douglas too political, the great sugar debate is a distraction. Diets are worse than useless, according to Marion. The Meghan Trainor video midway through the session is a big surprise. Then thereșs Mike; the high-flying marketing consultant until an obese teenager in an Oxfam tee-shirt provided the Don Draper moment that ended his career. Food labelling will never work, sugar monitoring apps are just toys, and the phrase ȘLifestyle Choiceș an oxymoron. Is the internet really making us fat? A last minute no-show by the keynote speaker and Phillip making a play for her job. Emma is under pressure and fighting on another front; she, too, is piling on the pounds. Even so, there is a disconnect between what she is hearing from the platform and her own struggle to lose weight.
This is Emmașs story. A typical day in her working week. Probably much like a typical day in your working week and begging the question: Yes, a lot of us are overweight but whose fault is that?
