WARNING: THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT SEX
Dangerous things often come with warning signs: "Cigarettes can harm your health," or "Dangerous Road Conditions Ahead." The intent is to let us know that by smoking or driving forward we're taking a risk.
Overcoming the Lies, Deceptions and Temptations around Sex should come with a warning sign.
Ø Warning: this book will change the way you think about sex.
Ø Warning: this book will discuss intimate matters that have always troubled you but you were afraid to talk about or ask.
Ø Warning: this book will put you out-of-step with the mainstream of our sexually permissible culture but in-step with the purposes of God."
BUT Overcoming the Lies, Deceptions and Temptations around Sex should also come with promises.
- ★ Promise: read this book and it will put you on the right path to a happy, sexually fulfilling relationship after marriage.
- ★ Promise: this book will give you practical tools for battling temptation, winning over lust, and combating the lures of pornography.
- ★ Promise: this book is realistic - the author understands sexual drive, the need for forgiveness, and the ongoing pressures that people, especially young people, face every day.
My friend and colleague in ministry to students Samuel Ebere writes with clarity, honesty, and biblical answers in Overcoming the Lies, Deceptions and Temptations around Sex. He integrates biblical teaching, his experiences in counseling young people, and practical suggestions to help us all live in God's ways - fulfilling our God-ordained destinies - rather than being derailed and destroyed by the "lusts of the flesh." Samuel explains clearly the connection between our minds and our fleshly actions, and he reminds us that God intends that we would live by decisions from a sound mind rather than impulses from animal desires.
In the biblical book of Proverbs chapter 7, the writer paints a picture of a simple young man who thoughtlessly wanders down the street of the prostitute. He succumbs to sexual temptation and her allures, and the writer observes, "He does not know it (the sexual sin outside of marriage) will cost him his life" (Proverbs 7: 23; one translation says "soul".
The young man is a product of his environment where temptation rules, sexual promiscuity is expected, and young men live by instincts. The writer points out at the beginning of his description that this young man is "simple" and "void of understanding" (Proverbs 7:7). In other words, he is guided by physical drives rather than by the discipline of his mind.
Overcoming the Lies, Deceptions and Temptations around Sex is about living the wise way, the way that God intended, with lives guided by wisdom and knowledge rather than by sexual urges.
I Corinthians 10:13 reminds us that we are all subject to temptation, but that in every temptation, God will provide a way of escape. For Old Testament Joseph, the way of escape was to run from Potiphar's wife. For the young man in Proverbs 7, the way of escape was to turn away from the prostitute's house and walk the other way. And for each of us, God will always provide a way of escape.
