Professeur d'ethnologie à l'université d'Alger, Ourida était spécialisée dans les peintures rupestres préhistoriques sahariennes. Enfant, elle aimait sa mère, Mary Blanchard, une expatriée américaine sans ressources, vivant dans un quartier d'immigrés nord-africains à Paris. Tarik, son père biologique berbère, était étudiant en ethnologie à la Sorbonne. En octobre 1961, quelques jours avant la naissance de Ourida, Tarik s'était joint à une marche politique pour l'indépendance de l'Algérie, brutalement stoppée par la police sous les ordres du préfet Papon. Disparu, Tarik est considéré comme mort, comme des centaines de manifestants.

Ourida s'est retrouvée en rupture culturelle. En quête obsessionnelle d'une figure paternelle depuis toujours, elle excelle dans les sciences et se passionne pour la culture berbère. Lors de sa dernière expédition en janvier 2013 dans le parc national du Tassili N'jjer au Sahara, elle et ses trois compagnons tombent victimes de terroristes lors du siège du site gazier d'In Amenas.

Gravement traumatisée, elle tomba victime d'un profond syndrome de stress post-traumatique. Par pur hasard, durant le chaos qui s'ensuivit dans tout le site assiégé, elle fut emmenée à l'ambassade des États-Unis à Alger. Au cours de son débriefing, les agents des services de renseignement américains découvrirent qu'elle était citoyenne américaine par sa mère. Elle fut donc prise en charge à l'hôpital naval de San Diego pour y suivre un traitement pour soulager son syndrome de stress post-traumatique.

Incapable de mettre fin à ses souffrances, elle s'enfuit à Todos Santos, en Basse-Californie. C'est là qu'elle redécouvre la chanson "Hotel California" du groupe Eagle Rock. La chanson qui l'avait apaisée au plus fort du siège terroriste d'In Amenas. À Todos Santos, elle s'est efforcée de comprendre, d'aimer et d'être aimée par la population locale et sa culture mystique. Ce faisant, elle a découvert les plaisirs d'une vie de famille authentique qu'elle n'avait jamais connue. Elle rencontre Carlos, un Amérindien de Basse Californie, autodidacte et passionné par les cultures préhistoriques, dont la sienne. Unis dans leur passion pour la science, ils découvrent le grand amour qui remodèlera leur vie à tout jamais.

Avec le tendre soutien de ses amis, elle est miraculeusement guérie de son syndrome de stress post-traumatique.
