About the Book

Otto Blumenthals Karriere war geprägt von Glück und Tragik. Als erster Doktorand wie auch Biograph David Hilberts stand er dem berühmten Göttinger Milieu sehr nah. Er wirkte fast drei Jahrzehnte an der Technischen Hochschule Aachen, wo er mit Kollegen wie Arnold Sommerfeld, Theodor von Kármán und Erich Trefftz zusammenarbeitete. Als ein weltoffener Geist pflegte Blumenthal viele Freundschaften mit ausländischen Mathematikern. Diese Haltung machte ihn aber zu einem Staatsfeind in den Augen der rechtsradikalen Aachener Studentenschaft, und er verlor 1933 wegen angeblicher politischer Unzuverlässigkeit seine Professur. Nach jahrelangen vergeblichen Versuchen, eine Stelle im Ausland zu erhalten, floh er 1939 nach Holland. Mit der deutschen Besetzung des Landes ab 1940 wurde aber die Lage dort für ihn und seine Frau immer unerträglicher. Nach ihrer Internierung verstarb seine Frau 1943 in einem holländischen Lager. Er selber kam 1944 in Theresienstadt ums Leben.

Dieser zweite Band macht eine Vielzahl von Schriften und Briefen Otto Blumenthals aus dem Zeitraum 1919-1944 zugänglich. Er beginnt mit einem Essay über Blumenthals Leben für die Mathematik. Ein Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit war seine Tätigkeit als Redakteur der Mathematischen Annalen. In den 1920er Jahren wurde die wissenschaftliche Arbeit in Deutschland allerdings stark von wirtschaftlichen und politischen Problemen beeinträchtigt. Sehr belastend war der von den Siegermächten verhängte wissenschaftliche Boykott, durch den versucht wurde, die internationale Zusammenarbeit ohne Beteiligung deutscher Wissenschaftler neu zu organisieren. Diese gespannte Atmosphäre führte zu Konflikten innerhalb der Annalen-Redaktion, die 1928 in einem offenen Machtkampf zwischen Hilbert und L.E.J. Brouwer gipfelten. Blumenthals Verhältnis zu beiden Kontrahenten wie auch seine zentrale Rolle in diesem Konflikt werden neben anderen Themen ausführlich dokumentiert und kommentiert.
