Qué otra cosa es la literatura sino la creación de mundos de ficción, de mundos paralelos, alternativos al mundo real. Ya en la Poética, Aristóteles dijo que la literatura es "el arte que imita solo con el lenguaje". Dicho de otra forma, la esencia de la literatura, es crear otra realidad semejante, análoga, parecida a la existente, mediante la palabra. Mucho más cerca en el tiempo, en el año 1974, los críticos de la literatura René Wellek y Austin Warren, señalaron que lo específico de la literatura era la ficción, lo que procede de la fantasía de un autor. Esto comprende, la creación de mundos y seres inexistentes en la realidad concreta y reconocible, a diferencia del discurso histórico, que trabaja siempre con referencias reales. Pero si bien es cierto que la ficción literaria solo existe en los parámetros de la obra creada, muchas veces, está generada e influenciada por la realidad histórica reconocible. Es así, que algunos autores, utilizan ciertos tipos de ficciones, para desde el terreno puramente artístico y literario, aludir al mundo en el que les ha tocado vivir, o plasmar en sus textos aquellos mundos que dependiendo de determinadas condiciones históricas, sociales o políticas podrían llegar a existir. Del estudio de este tipo de obras es que se trata este libro. Las utopías, distopías y ucronías, son ficciones que presentan sociedades alternativas a las de la realidad concreta. El libro consta de cuatro artículos, publicados originalmente en la revista VADENUEVO (Uruguay) y en el portal literario El buen librero (Perú). Comienza con el escrito titulado LITERATURA UTÓPICA, donde se abordan aquellas ficciones que describen el funcionamiento de estados ideales, alternativos a los del mundo real. Las obras estudiadas son: Utopía (1516) de Tomas Moro, Los viajes de Gulliver (1726) de Jonathan Swift, y finalmente Cándido o el optimismo (1759) de Voltaire. El segundo artículo se titula LITERATURA DISTÓPICA, y allí se trabaja con aquellas ficciones que muestran un futuro desesperanzador, alienante, sin libertad y absurdo. Las obras estudiadas son: Un mundo feliz (1932) de Aldous Huxley, 1984 (1949) de George Orwell, y finalmente Farenheit 451 (1953) de Ray Bradbury. El tercer artículo, titulado LITERATURA UCRÓNICA, se detiene en el estudio de las ficciones que especulan sobre los posibles caminos que hubiera podido seguir una sociedad si determinado hecho histórico no se hubiera dado como en realidad se dio. Allí las obras estudiadas son: El hombre en el castillo (1962) de Philip K. Dick y Watchmen (1986 - 1987) de Alan Moore y Dave Gibbons. Finalmente, se ha agregado al libro un artículo titulado NO SOLO UNA DISTOPÍA, que si bien es el estudio específico de El talón de hierro, una obra del escritor norteamericano Jack London, es un artículo que posee un apartado final donde se abordan algunos temas tratados a lo largo de este libro.
