Las denominadas "enfermedades crónicas" han generado una cantidad ingente de enfermos que están desbordando todas las previsiones, además de las arcas de los laboratorios fabricantes de medicamentos para ellas. No se trata de enfermedades agudas, ni siquiera de patologías incurables, sino sencillamente de algo que -dicen- el enfermo debe asumir de por vida, como asumimos que debemos envejecer, tener arrugas y perder vitalidad muscular. Pero a pesar de que realmente no se trata de enfermedades, el paciente sale siempre de la consulta médica con un tratamiento médico que deberá consumir durante todo el resto de su vida ¿Si no tienen solución, por qué hay que medicarse? "Para prevenir las complicaciones -les explican-". Indudablemente las complicaciones aparecerán, pero será por esa medicación tomada fielmente durante años y años. Y refiriéndonos al objeto de este libro, ¿cuál es el riego, si es que lo hay, de padecer osteoporosis? Básicamente las fracturas óseas, entre las cuales destacan las de cadera. Pero cuando leemos estadísticas publicadas por entidades no ligadas a ningún laboratorio farmacéutico, nos encontramos que solamente un 1% de las personas afectadas de osteoporosis llega a tener una fractura de cadera. A cambio, años y años de medicación para prevenir algo que no podrán evitar, salvo que sigan otras normas y medidas que a lo largo de este libro describiremos. Lo cierto es que nos encontramos ante una enfermedad que es solamente un proceso de la involución, del mismo modo que lo son la pérdida de la memoria, la aparición de las arrugas, la disminución de la agudeza visual y la caída del cabello. Una vez instauradas paulatinamente en el organismo, estas alteraciones lo hacen de forma definitiva, no siendo ninguna de ellas una enfermedad propiamente dicha, lo que no quiere decir que debamos cruzarnos de brazos para asumir nuestro declive. La osteoporosis, aunque es un proceso natural en el camino al envejecimiento, se parece demasiado a otras enfermedades óseas como la osteomalacia, el raquitismo y la osteopenia, pero mientras éstas responden bien a una medicación sabiamente administrada, la osteoporosis se resiste a desaparecer con la terapia química habitual. Los médicos, por supuesto, saben y avisan que no tiene cura y que la "descalcificación" (término incorrecto, puesto que los huesos no se descalcifican), llegará inevitablemente. La pregunta es de nuevo la misma: Si no tiene cura ¿para qué medicarse? En este caso suelen responder que es para que no avance demasiado rápido, algo que no podrán evitar -aunque sí agudizar- con esa nefasta costumbre de administrar calcio. Cuando el enfermo sea sometido a las rutinarias pruebas de la densiometría ósea (DO) o Rastreo de la Densidad Ósea, comprobará desilusionado que todo ese tratamiento no está haciendo ningún efecto y que sus huesos pierden de forma tenaz el preciado calcio que necesitan. "¿Qué quiere usted? -le dirá el médico un poco enfadado-. Con los años que tiene es lógico que le ocurran estas cosas". ¿Entonces -preguntará dócil el enfermo-, ya no tengo que tomar la medicación? "Sí, por supuesto. No deje de tomarla porque entonces será peor". ¿Y no hay nada más que se pueda hacer? "Yo no sé hacer milagros, así que resignación -le responderá con ironía científica".
