Este libro surge para intentar llenar un vacío esencial en los libros que se han escrito en los últimos años en Europa sobre el ritmo de habaneras y (havaneres), ese vacío está relacionado con la poca o nula información sobre el ritmo africano (negro y afrocubano) que es la esencia de la habanera y la cadencia de su ritmo. La habanera en el siglo XIX, fue llamada de muchas formas, ritmo de tango, tango de negritos, ritmo de habaneras, americanas y hasta criollas, pero siempre fue los mismo. También rompe otros tópicos de quiénes plantean que la habanera se fue de Cuba en el siglo XIX, se plantó en Europa y allá se abandonó, falso. También certifico su éxito en las zarzuelas españolas del siglo XIX y en los festivales de habaneras en Torrevieja o Calella de Palafrugell desde los años cincuenta del siglo pasado.
Contiene el perfil más completo aparecido en un libro de música sobre María (Gamboa) Martínez, una negra liberta cubana, que paseó el tango cubano con su guitarra por Madrid, Londres y París en sus mejores escenarios desde 1936 hasta 1950 subvencionada por la Reina Isabel y que deslumbró a muchos entre ellos Charles Baudelaire quien le dedicó un poema recogido aquí.
Las tres vertientes de la habanera: la instrumental, la lírica (bel canto) y la popular, todas se siguieron creando en Cuba. Desde 1803 que se sitúa las primeras, destacando "La bella cubana," J. White; "La Bayamesa" Fornaris, o Tu, Sánchez de Fuentes, las tres son habaneras de autores cubanos del siglo XIX. Manuel Samuel más de 50 dejó escritas, Ignacio Cervantes o Escudero, tres autores del s XIX así lo demuestran con las partituras.
En el siglo XX, las primeras grabaciones de RCA Víctor incluyeron "habaneras," luego el teatro Regina y Martí en Cuba fueron escenarios de zarzuelas cubanas como Niña Rita (1927), Cecilia Valdés (1931) o Amalia Batista, de Eliseo Grenet, Lecuona y Prat, todas plagadas de tangos y habaneras, sin olvidar que María Teresa Vera, Gonzalo Roig, Marta Valdés y otros muchos escriben habaneras hasta los días de hoy.
Este libro trata de la legitimidad afrocubana en la habanera, que surge de la contradanza cubana y el tango. Con fotos, partituras y datos objetivos y quizás la cronología histórica más completa de este género al final del libro.
