Orvallo es una novela que tenía que escribir, me rondaba en la cabeza desde que conocí Galicia en mi lejana juventud. Fue un flechazo cuando llegué a la estación de La Coruña en aquel tren. Me enamoré para siempre de Galicia cuando salí de esa estación de aires nórdicos. Orvallaba, un orvallo fino bañaba la ciudad, también fue ese mi primer contacto con el orvallo, recorriendo las calles empedradas de La Coruña. Recuerdo que en los altavoces de una tienda de discos de la calle Real se escuchaba la voz de Julio Iglesias. Un canto a Galicia era la canción que interpretaba, que se podía escuchar desde la calle:

Eu queroche tanto

e ainda non lo sabes...

Cantaba Julio ese día de primeros de marzo de 1972. Desde entonces supe que algún día tendría que escribir una novela sobre Galicia y sobre el orvallo que me recibió aquel lejano día.

Pero hay una parte de Galicia que me ha atrapado con una fuerza especial: el río Eume y los paisajes que atraviesa. Creo que es que porque me atraen los lugares montaraces, indómitos y ariscos. Lugares en lo que la vida es dura y donde siempre ha vivido poca gente.

Existe la Comarca do Eume o Terras do Eume, en la provincia de La Coruña. Pero aquí quiero referirme al curso completo, desde el norte de Lugo hasta Pontedeume.

El Eume nace en la Serra do Xistral. Apenas supera los 1000 metros pero es un lugar duro e inhóspito, de constantes lluvias, de niebla densa y frecuente. Las grandes turberas me recuerdan las de las montañas del norte de Escocia. Nunca ha sido fácil vivir aquí.

El otro paisaje indómito de este río son las fragas del Eume o fragas do Eume. Aquí descubrí el mágico monasterio de San Juan de Caaveiro; también hay puentes y construcciones hidráulicas, pero el espeso bosque de robles y hayas lo domina todo, hasta la luz. Es una luz velada, tamizada por el ramaje de los árboles.

Estos paisajes son los que han inspirado mi novela Orvallo. Se metieron en mi cabeza y he terminado recreándolos. Los he convertido en una geografía mítica, que se nutre de la original pero es ya otra cosa.

Sí, tenía que escribir Orvallo, tenía que escribir una novela que se adentrase en la profundidad de los bosques de Galicia, misteriosos, brumosos bosques donde la sombra de un céltico druida aún se refleja en los claros de luna: luar na lubre. Quería hablar de los gallegos, afables y acogedores, quería pintar su saudade y el amor a su tierra que permanece fiel desde la distancia.

Quería contar Galicia y la tragedia que durante siglos ha perseguido a sus gentes que les ha obligado a marcharse, a dejarlo todo para ir en busca de un sueño casi imposible.

En la ciudad donde nací y crecí, no emigraba nadie, más bien la gente venía en busca de trabajo y oportunidades. Yo no había conocido a ningún emigrante hasta que llegué a Galicia y supe que en la mayoría de las familias alguien tuvo que emigrar, tuvo que dejarlo todo y marchar a otros países de América o de Europa en busca de una vida mejor en un lugar lejano, desconocido, casi siempre arisco.

Orvallo no es una novela trágica, no es ese mi deseo. He querido contar una realidad cierta, pero desde una mirada amable. Una mirada que, conociendo las sombras de su tragedia, intenta ver su lado más luminoso, que también lo hay.

Los que triunfaron, los indianos que regresaron a su tierra a encontrarse con los recuerdos de su juventud y..., por qué no decirlo, a morir en el lugar que los vio nacer.
