In den Meinungen spielen Klischees, zum Teil noch aus dem Mittelalter stammend, und Unkenntnis eine grosse Rolle. Viele haben den Eindruck, die Begegnungen zwischen Orient und Okzident seien von jeher gepragt von immerwahrenden Konflikten, einem stets schwelenden und zuweilen offen ausbrechenden Kampf der Kulturen: von den Kampfen zwischen Griechen und Persern uber die arabisch-islamischen Eroberungen nach Mohammed, die Kreuzzuge und die Turken vor Wien bis zu heutigen islamistischen Terroranschlagen. Aber dies ist ein sehr unvollstandiger Eindruck von der tatsachlichen geschichtlichen Entwicklung, der zu falschen Schlussfolgerungen fuhrt. In Band 14 der Buchreihe der Georges-Anawati-Stiftung beschreiben Nevfel Cumart und Ulrich Waas die umfassendere Geschichte des kulturellen Austauschs zwischen Morgenland und Abendland, der fur beide Seiten sehr bereichernd war und der die Basis fur das Entscharfen heutiger Konflikte sein kann. Das Buch greift - kritisch und selbstkritisch - in anschaulicher Form die wesentlichen Themen auf, die man fur einen erfolgreichen Dialog kennen sollte. Was ist die gemeinsame kulturelle Tradition? Wie hat die kulturelle Entwicklung in Europa vom Orient profitiert - und wie die des Orients von Europa? Wie entwickelten sich die Religionen in diesem Zusammenhang? Gibt es uberhaupt den Islam und das Christentum? Wie kann man sich dem Koran nahern? Vertieft behandelt werden die Entwicklung von Gewalt oder Toleranz gegenuber Andersglaubigen und Minderheiten, der Stellung der Frauen in der Gesellschaft und der Religion als Mittel zur Machtsicherung. Was folgt daraus fur unser heutiges Handeln, damit wir nicht blind reagieren, sondern mit Kenntnis, was schadet und was hilft?
