(Kühl 2011: 9) Wir werden (meist) im Krankenhaus geboren, von unseren Eltern in den Kindergarten geschickt, besuchen die Schule, studieren an einer Universität, gehen nebenbei in eine Tanzschule, arbeiten in einem Betrieb - und sind somit stets Mitglieder einer oder mehrerer Organisationen. Doch selten ist uns bewusst, was sie genau ist und wie sie funktioniert. Fachkräfte der Sozialen Arbeit werden stets als Berater und Helfer gesehen - doch sie sind viel mehr als das. Als Angestellte bei z. B. einem freien Träger gehören wir einer sozialen Organisation an, was bedeutet, dass wir uns stets an bestimmte Regeln halten müssen, um den Auftrag der Organisation bestmöglich zu erfüllen. Ausgangspunkt für die Motivation zur Bearbeitung der folgenden Ausführungen und Beschäftigung mit der Rolle von Organisationen und ihren Strukturen stellt die eigene zukünftige Verankerung in einer solchen dar. Um die langfristige Existenz von und in Organisationen zu gewährleisten, ist es unabdingbar, bestimmte Instrumente wie Management in einer Organisation zu verinnerlichen. Um zu Beginn dieser Arbeit einen Einblick in die elementaren Begriffe zu geben, wird im ersten Kapitel fokussiert, was eine Organisation ist und wodurch sie sich auszeichnet. Um Organisationen zu steuern, benötigt es das Management, das daraufhin im zweiten Kapitel erläutert wird. Es werden seine Begrifflichkeit definiert sowie Merkmale, Funktion und Handlungsebenen beschrieben. Da diese Ausarbeitung mit Bezug zur Sozialen Arbeit stattfindet, soll im dritten Teil des Kapitels eine Abgrenzung zum Sozialmanagement und dessen Erläuterung stattfinden.
