Oscar Ozinam 0tzman è il pseudonimo del l'autore di queste poesie, le quali io scelsi già dai M ss. Ch' ci mi volle donare in memoria del suo affetto ed ora pongo alla luce per farne presente a quegli spiriti gentili che piacendosi di coltivare gli ameni studi non hanno a disdegno il dolce linguaggio delle Muse. Io non conosco s' egli avrà in grado siffatta pubblicazione; ma purchè io non abbia rivelato il vero nome di lui che a me faceane regalo io potea farne (mi penso) come di cosa propria quel che più 'mi paresse: non ho quindi a temere che a lui dispiaccia il mio qua lunque siasi divisamento. Ho a temere bensì che alcuno ai quegli Zoili maligni di cui tanto abbou da la repubblica delle lettere, pigliando cagione dal genere anzi triste che no di tali poesie non voglia forse notarmi d' inconsideratezza, nell' averle io fidate alla stampa quasi che avessi io contrad detto alla scuola da me professate (ch'è la scuola del Manzoni e del Tommaseo) la qual si ha tutt' altro ministero che quello di seminar lo sconfor to, il dubbio, la disperazione. Il perchè voglio a tutti sia noto, per cessare ogni sinistro giudizio che quelle poesie dettate furono da un cuore infe lice fuor di misura, e in cert' istanti, che, a non sentire il fremito delle passioni, si converria esser macigni! Non è già ch'io ponga il suggello di approvazione alle medesime, perchè sempre ho te nuto dover l'arte impiegarsi a consolazione e sol lievo dell' umanità, e non mai ad accrescimento di sciagure e di affanni. Intendo però che chi vo lesse far segno a grave biasimo l' autore di questi Canti, non dovrebbe risparmiarne quel modello di cristiana rassegnazione, il religiosissimo Pellico che in taluni momenti sceglieva a terra quella Bib bia in difesa di cui avrebbe posta la vita. Per tanto si abbiano come sfoghi o deliri di violente passioni; e invece di biasimarne l'autore, si tragga frutto da quelli considerando a quale infelicità sia per condurre altrui l' abbandonarsi dell' anima, il cedere al proprio cuore. (ho premesso, toccherà della forma dei Canti, ' perchè non si creda che il vivo affetto il quale io sento per l'autore, mi faccia velo al giudizio: secondo il gusto ond' oggi scriver si suole da coloro che grande studio non han fatto sui Classici, quella potrebbe dirsi incoi pabile: ma tal non la potrebbero dire per rerun conto coloro che adusati al bello scrivere, e rive renti ai canoni dell' arte, sentiranno talvolta per dirla con l'alighieri, sacor di forte agrume: il che nasce or da soverchio impeto fuoco entusiasmo dello scrittore, or da sovrabbondanza d' idee e d'im magini or da negligenza o difetto dell' orazione Iimua labor: non può negarsi però che nella mas sima parte dei Canti non sia spontaneità verità naturalezza particolarmente nelle Canzoni ch' è quel genere di poesia che suol dare maggior bri ga agli autori: vero è che in queste talvolta si tro va alcun' ombra di oscurità, ma ciò nasce per aver voluto l' autore pigliar quell' ampio giro che anchenel Sommo Leopardi (sebben qualche rara volta) induce poca perspicuità e lucidezza.
