About the Book

De "nummererede" eller "numeriske" diskurser er generelt kendt som Aṅguttara Nikāya på Pāli, forkortet AN. Pāli-traditionen er imidlertid også kendt som Ekottara ("en opadgående" eller "inkrementel"), dvs. den inkrementelle samling, og det er den form, der generelt findes i nordlige samlinger. Disse samlinger arrangerer teksterne i nummererede sæt, fra et til elleve. Sammenlignet med de andre nikāyas er de mere orienteret mod lægfolk. Ekottarikāgama (EA) på kinesisk er en meget usædvanlig tekst, der præsenterer en række variationer i sig selv, selv når det drejer sig om grundlæggende doktriner. Den har meget mindre til fælles med Aṅguttara på Pāli end de andre samlinger har med deres modstykker. Desuden findes der en delvis Ekottarikāgama på kinesisk samt en række individuelle diskurser og fragmenter på kinesisk og sanskrit.
I de to første bøger, enerne og toerne, har vi et meget interessant træk. Ikke i meget læsbart materiale, da det aldrig var meningen, at det skulle læses som en læsbar bog. Vi finder ikke med lister kaldet Mātikās, eller vandløb, dvs. billedligt talt kanaler, langs hvilke den mundtlige undervisning ville flyde; dvs. overskrifter for talen. Disse ville sandsynligvis være blevet skrevet på tynde metalplader længe før man forsøgte at skrive selve talerne. Et sådant skrivemateriale, plader eller også bogstaver, der er hugget i sten, egnede sig dårligt til at blive udvidet.
Den anden bog, den om doserne, bibeholder den foregående bogs matrixstruktur af Mātikās, der tjener som en mnemoteknisk base af overskrifter, der skal huskes, så den er ikke særlig læsevenlig og derfor er dens interesse meget begrænset. Vi kan fremhæve AN 2.61, om den permanente kvindelige utilfredshed som et meget kuriøst originalt bidrag.
Den tredje bog i Aṅguttara Nikāya, Samlingen af Buddhas nummererede diskurser, samler 352 suttas eller diskurser, hvis emne er centreret omkring grupper af tre emner. Der er f.eks. samlet suttas, ikke udtømmende, som taler om de tre følelsesmæssige reaktioner: behagelige, ubehagelige og ligegyldige. Der er andre suttas, som er medtaget i andre samlinger, men som ikke er med i denne samling.
Bogen om tre bøger bryder med den rent mnemotekniske mekanik i "matika"-serien i de to første bøger. Dette er en bog, der er skabt til at blive læst. Alligevel er både dens emne og indhold langt fra interessant, da den hverken fortæller om Buddhas liv eller indeholder unikke doktrinære principper.
Måske er den mest interessante sutta AN 3.65: With the kālamas of Kesamutta, som handler om at antage en tro baseret på resultater snarere end på fejlslutninger. Det er en lang og interessant sutta.
På den modsatte side og markeret med en dobbelt stjerne (**) finder vi et par udadvendte suttas, der er taget ud af kontekst, med en særlig struktur og et falsk indhold. Det er suttas AN 3.80: Minor og AN 3.107: Klagesangene.
"Minor" er en diskurs, der både strukturelt og indholdsmæssigt ligner de dekadente suttas, som Gogerly mødte ved sin ankomst til Sri Lanka i det 19. århundrede, og som er kendetegnet ved at skildre Buddha som et mellemting mellem mytologisk og fantastisk væsen udstyret med magiske kræfter, meget efter smag af østlig overskud. Så vi kan her se Buddha give stemmer, der høres i alle galakserne, og i slutningen af suttaen får fantasien frit løb, når Buddha bliver en profet, der forudsiger, at: "Ānanda vil blive udslettet i det nuværende liv", hvilket viste sig at være forkert. Enhver falsk sutta har en uægte hensigt, og i dette tilfælde er det at nitte ortodoksien og troværdigheden af en af lederne af det første koncil, som langt fra var værdig, men som ikke engang opnåede noget, da han var mere optaget af at handle med kåber end af praksis.
