Den første bog i Dīgha Nikāya, Samlingen af Buddhas lange diskurser, samler 17 suttas, der ikke passer ind i det typiske format af diskurser, men er grupperinger, der er skabt århundreder senere og som er blevet klassificeret som en anden kanonisk samling.
Mens suttas i de kanoniske samlinger: Saṁyutta, Majjhima og Anguttara Nikayas, har til formål at forklare Buddhas ord, doktrin og undervisning samt at give nogle omstændigheder, er denne bog derimod en heterogen samling af hidsige skældsord mod de forskellige trosretninger, der stødte sammen med den begyndende buddhisme.
Diatribe, eller "debat", er betegnelsen for en kort etisk diskurs, især af den type, som blev skrevet af de kyniske og stoiske filosoffer. Disse populære moralske læsninger havde ofte en polemisk tone, der var rettet mod enkeltpersoner eller sociale grupper. I dette tilfælde lader de intet samfund, tro, trosretning eller religion fra den tid uangribes.
Denne bog ser ud til at være skrevet med henblik på at blive givet til buddhistiske missionærer, som skal bruge den som en manual til at debattere andre religioner med henblik på at vinde tilhængere. Dette er tonen i de fleste af de første tretten indlæg. Hverken mytomani eller mølleri, som den indiske offentlighed altid har været så glad for, foragtes.
Hvis vi studerer deres struktur, ser vi straks, at de er helt fremmede for de kanoniske, og deres indhold består generelt af en bagvaskelse af en religiøs gruppe, efterfulgt af en række korte indklæbninger af kanoniske suttas, der er udvalgt uden større kriterier.
DN 9. Med Poṭṭṭhapāda går den ukendte forfatter ind i en række dialektiske fælder, indtil han når et punkt, hvor han ikke kan komme ud og løser det ved at komplicere alting endnu mere, så intet er klart. I DN 13. De tre kundskaber beskyldes brahmanerne for de samme laster og fejl som de buddhistiske munke. Resten af de falske diskurser forsøger ikke at efterligne suttas regelmæssige struktur og hverken ordlyd eller indhold, hvilket viser et kort kendskab fra deres forfattere til resten af Nikayaerne.

Endelig er det mærkeligt, at denne samling er den mest populære blandt nutidens buddhistiske tilhængere.
Tre af de fire store diskurser er også samlet: Mahapadana, Mahanidana og Mahaparinibbana.
Men pletten af usandhed går også gennem to af de store diskurser: Mahapadana eller Buddhas store krønike, som er en pamflet af en overdreven barok overdreven selv for orientalsk smag, og den omfattende Mahaparinibbana, som ikke er fri for usandheder, der er spredt ud over hele den omfattende skrift.
Tværtimod er Mahanidana, eller den store diskurs om årsagerne, en udtømmende samling af teorien om den afhængige oprindelse i en enkelt tekst, og Mahasatipatthana, eller den store diskurs om instruktionerne om praksis, gør det samme med forskellige praksisser. Det er ikke dem alle, men dem, som den behandler, gør den i dybden.
Alene disse to taler gør denne bog værd at læse.
