About the Book

A deeply loving, emotional roller coaster of anecdotal and mesmerising fantasy, that will educate and amaze you and leave you with a smile on your face or a lump in your throat. What divine spark is it that makes a sporting Champion? Is it talent, drive, ambition opportunity, development or simply providence and fate? The eternal question of nurture against nature is always an endless, divisive and difficult subject to weigh and balance. We meet, Sam Chester firstly as a boy who falls in love with golf at a mere 11 years of age and it seems the golfing gods have chosen him to be their advocate and winner for the highest awards, accolades and prizes. Or have they? Sam's path is quickly fraught and strewn with obstacles then blinding, dazzling but chequered success and subsequent failure; his road seems to be blocked, his ambitions thwarted and too early on in his promised journey, all but ended and turned to dust. But life or real destiny can sometimes surprise you and on those rare, spiritually guided occasions all you truly need to succeed is, the right catalyst, some love, inspiration and...just that little bit of magic! A story by Neville Chesses, a former champion golfer himself, who has crafted a classical tale that mixes fact with wonderful, exciting, poignant, dynamic and fantastical fiction. The early parts of the book are based on unbelievable, amazing truths but with a turn or a twist of artistic licence, and the later chapters just something dreamlike, enchanting and wonderful. In many ways it is an insight, to how sport and, golf in particular is... and fancifully, how it was meant to be! Fantastic, intricate, sometimes intimate details on each turned page that will demonstrate to the reader that you don't have to understand or love golf, to relish and enjoy a wonderfully engaging and moving story.
About the Author: Neville Chesses was one of the best junior golfers the UK had ever produced; at 17 years of age he defeated the reigning US amateur champion, Jerry Pate at Hoylake and reached the semi finals of the British Boys championships. Many of his contemporaries became feted professionals and Ryder Cup players but his destiny was never to travel this road as his early promise ultimately developed into a constant, bitter struggle. Even though by chance he discovered the secret of golf when he was around 24, enabling him to finally win many county, area and national championships, by then the desire, mixed with the ambition to dedicate and devote his life to the game, had long dissipated and gone. Neville retired from golf in his late twenties; married, had two children, moved to the North West and did not touch a club for over 20 years. Eventually he returned to the Midlands where he rekindled his passion for the sport and, between his business interests, now teaches professionally, part time at a local driving range for pleasure, satisfaction and fun. He finds it an obligation, honour and a privilege to pass on the knowledge he has gleaned and learned from such luminaries as Sir Henry Cotton or more importantly in many ways, his own errors. Neville considers that preventing his pupils making the same mistakes he did is undoubtedly a blessing and, through this cathartic process has rediscovered the same love for golf once more that he first had as a child. This story had been in his active mind for many years but finally as he had the time he wanted to write and share it. He sincerely hopes the people that read this adventure are illuminated and informed in some of the realities and sacrifices needed to be made to achieve in sport, and enjoy his combined reminiscences and imagination.
