Die Digitalisierung der Information und Kommunikationsmedien haben im Sektor des Marketings für Unternehmen tiefgreifende Veränderungen mit sich gebracht. Die daraus entstandene Online-Kommunikation hat in Deutschland in den letzten Jahren kontinuierlich an Bedeutung gewonnen. Online zu sein ist zu einer zentralen sozialen wie auch beruflichen Verpflichtung geworden. In Deutschland haben bereits über 75 % aller Bürger einen Internetanschluss. Diese Entwicklung ist wegweisend, wenn man sich das Medium Online-Marketing ansieht und die neuen Dimensionen, die es dadurch erreicht hat. Innerhalb dieses Kommunikationsträgers hat sich der Begriff Social Media in den letzten Jahren immer mehr zu einer alltäglichen Erscheinung entwickelt. Wo vorher über Suchmaschinenoptimierung oder Mailings versucht wurde, den Internetnutzer auf sich aufmerksam zu machen, ist es heute entscheidend, auf eine taktvollere Art im World Wide Web auf sich aufmerksam zu machen. Gerade im Bereich des Non-Government-Sektors eröffnen sich somit viele Möglichkeiten, um Mitglieder zu gewinnen, Fundraising zu betreiben und seine Stakeholder gezielt zu informieren.
