Il libro parla di un ragazzo, Walter, le cui origini sono del sud d'Italia, che con problemi legati al lavoro e vedovo da poco, deve fare tutto il possibile per vivere, lui e suo figlio. Un giorno inizia a lavorare in un locale notturno, ed è proprio li che succede qualcosa che lo fa diventare parte di una famiglia locale appartenente alla mafia. Lui sa come funziona e segretamente manda il figlio in un orfanotrofio dove qualcuno può occuparsi di lui e chiamare delle volte per sapere come sta. Dopo anni con la mafia decide di parlare con il suo Boss per renderlo libero, ma tutti sanno che è impossibile. Il boss, Don Tommasino, a sorpresa di Walter, dice di si a patto che lui faccia un lavoro impossibile. Il compito è quello di uccidere un Boss appartenente ad una famiglia rivale per rendere l'attuale famiglia più potente. "Questo è il prezzo per essere libero". Walter accetta il lavoro, perché il suo scopo è quello di essere libero e tornare a vivere con suo figlio. Ma qualcosa accade... un sabotaggio fa fallire la missione. Dopo mesi, il capo di Walter ha ricevuto un messaggio che diceva che tutti i capi famiglia sono stati invitati a un incontro e lui aveva chiesto a Walter se voleva una seconda possibilità di essere libero. Ovviamente lui è d'accordo e ha deciso di iniziare subito a mettersi a lavoro. Inizia a ispezionare la zona e va a rilassarsi in un night club dove incontra una misteriosa cameriera, Caroline, ma lui molto sospettoso decide di tornare in hotel dove incontra un collega ed amico, Matteo, che vuole aiutare Walter per la missione. La cameriera che ha incontrato e che ha avuto un appuntamento ha un segreto. È un agente della DEA, e Walter scopre perché ha fallito la missione, il capo cerca di uccidere Walter con un sabotaggio, ma lui fortunatamente si salva a discapito della squadra della DEA. Ora il capo di Walter vuole uccidere tutti i capi delle famiglie e sedersi al "Grande Tavolo". Walter vuole una vendetta, e anche Caroline, agente della DEA, per i colleghi morti in quella missione, e ha deciso con Ruslan, l'agente partner di Caroline, di avere un piano con Walter, può arrestare il suo capo, fermare il tentativo di Don Tommasino di uccidere i capi famiglia e Walter avrà la possibilità di essere libero. Jennifer, la figlia di un boss e amica di Walter, che era presente alla riunione, ha deciso di aiutarlo. Prima dell'incontro, Walter ha trovato un membro della famiglia, Francis, che prova a mettere una bomba per uccidere tutti, ma viene fermato da Walter che quando è andato alla riunione, ha parlato con tutti e ha portato le prove che il suo capo, Don Tommasino, vuole uccidere tutti, intanto arrivano gli agenti della DEA ad arrestarlo e in un grande caos in cui tutti scappano, Don Tommasino prende una pistola e la punta verso Walter... E li è successo qualcosa che ha permesso a Walter di essere libero.
