About the Book

Chapter 1

It was cold and refreshing evening for the people of Okpata in Umuaro. Umuaro was a big community made up of four villages including Okpata.
Umuaro was peaceful with small traces of civilization. There were schools, hospitals, churches, and pipe-borne water. Everybody had returned from their farms as farming was the main occupation. Thus only a few had acquired western education and most took to teaching. It was as yet the only place to work with one's certificate.
The peculiar evening had most families outside and enjoying the fresh breeze that made the day different from any time before. Other recent evenings were characterized by discomfort, occasioned by the unusually hot weather. The blazing heat came from the dry-season sun that had greeted Okpata and environs with unprecedented fierceness.
On this evening, the heat had been mellowed by the early showers of that morning. Typical of the people around this period, some families were telling stories whilst others discussed the New Yam festival that was fast approaching.
Umuaro had remained evergreen with trees and shrubs. Birds flew in and out of their nests as squirrels jumped from one palm tree to the other enjoying the cool evening. It was the birthplace of Lucky the son of Uzodimma. He had died when Lucky was five years old and still too young to comprehend what had happened.
His mother, Uremma, was fondly addressed as "Mama Lucky" because of her kind gesture towards people. She was not enjoying the freshness of that evening because of her husband's death. Her husband had passed away five years ago, but whenever she saw his grave behind the compound, she became moody. On this day a sudden grief had overtaken her also because of the maltreatment from her brothers-in-law. For Mama Lucky and her only son there was no food left in the house.
But Lucky suddenly remembered Mazi Orji his father's old friend who comes around to share his joy with them and to see how they were faring. "Mama, can I go and ask Mazi Orji for assistance and so we can have something to eat tonight?" Lucky had asked in a most unusual manner. To this mother gave some thought for some minutes and then replied.
"Let's go and see him before it gets too late." Before they could go to Mazi Orji's house, Mazi surprisingly came into the compound shouting at the top of his voice...............................Praise for the novel

The novel Once Upon A Hard Time is a didatic novel with lots of inspiration. The protagonist has an ebullient spirit that propelled him to very great heights.
The thematic exposition of Chidiebere is such that parents, Children and siblings should emulate the rugged and dogged nature of Lucky. I invite you to pleasurable reading.
