Gegenstand der Verhaltenswissenschaftlichen Forschung in Bezug auf Omission Bias ist die Untersuchung der Präferenz für Schäden, die durch Auslassungen verursacht werden, gegenüber gleichen oder geringeren Schäden, die durch Handlungen verursacht werden. Verschiedene Studien besagen, dass der Mensch lieber nicht handelt, wenn die Folgen der Handlung unsicher sind. Basierend auf den Erkenntnissen der Grundlagenforschung, diein den 1990er Jahren ihren Ursprung fanden, befassen sich aktuelle Anwendungsbeispiele mit den Fragen zur Allgemeingültigkeit dieses Phänomens, welche darauf hinweisen, dass manchmal die gegenteilige Tendenz besteht. Weiters wurden zum Omission Bias drei Schlüsselfaktoren für den Auslassungsverzerrungseffekt erörtert: Kausalität, Intentionalität und Bedauern. In zahlreichen Studien entdeckte man das "third-person-judgement" Phänomen. Es bezeichnet, dass Menschen Unterlassungen Dritter weniger verwerflich finden als eine aktive Handlung, die zum selben Ergebnis führt. Bei einem 1991 durchgeführten Experiment wurde dieses Phänomen bestätigt. Seit dieser Studie wird diese Asymmetrie zwischen Handeln und Unterlassen als Unterlassungsbias oder Unterlassungseffekt bezeichnet. Im Rahmen der "first-person-choice" kommen mehrere Psychologen zu der Auffassung, dass in der Regel Handlungen moralisch schlechter sind als Unterlassungen. Die mildere Beurteilung von Unterlassung durch Dritte kann dazu führen, dass Individuen lernen, in Zukunft ihre Vorgehensweise ähnlich zu gestalten.
