Ollodagos est la revue de la Société Belge d'Etudes Celtiques.Dean A. Miller a été un des participants les plus réguliers des Journées d'études de la Société belge d'Études celtiques. Depuis 1999, ce sont quatre de ses articles qui ont été publiés dans Ollodagos. Pourtant, il n'était pas celtisant ni même familier de la matière celtique, mais c'est là un des points forts de notre société que de s'ouvrir aux études comparatives.Et Dean A. Miller était justement un comparatiste d'importance. Sa spécialisation originelle était l'étude de Byzance, spécialisation matérialisée dans deux livres importants: Byzantine Tradition et Imperial Constantinople. New Dimensions in History . Mais, très tôt, il s'était tourné vers l'étude des symboles royaux dans l'empire byzantin, intérêt qui s'était exprimé notamment dans deux articles publiés dans les Annales ESC, et qui l'avait évidemment amené à la mythologie, notamment la mythologie indo-européenne. Il avait depuis intégré l'équipe du Journal of Indo-European Studies dont il coordonnait, avec Nick Allen et Emily Blanchard West, la section mythologique, revue dans laquelle il a publié là encore de nombreux articles ayant pour thème le roi indo-européen, mais aussi le héros.C'est d'ailleurs sur ce thème majeur, le héros, qu'il a publié sa grande oeuvre, The Epic Hero . Dean A. Miller n'était bien entendu pas le premier auteur à s'attacher à la figure du héros épique. Il y avait eu par exemple avant lui le psychanalyste Otto Rank ou le comparatiste Joseph Campbell . Mais leurs démarches souffraient d'un défaut majeur: elles abordaient souvent les mythes à partir d'une vulgate et ne prenaient pas en compte les variantes qui peuvent exister. Dean A. Miller, lui, se posait dans la continuation du structuralisme mythologique français, et donc dans le prolongement des travaux de Georges Dumézil et de Claude Lévi-Strauss. Aussi tâchait-il de ne négliger au détail, aucune variante. Et, s'il est bien sûr possible maintenant d'aller au-delà de son travail, en le précisant et en l'affinant, il n'empêche que The Epic Hero est un livre incontournable pour ce qui concerne l'étude des épopées relevant du domaine indo-européen.Professeur émérite de religions comparées à l'Université de Rochester, Dean A. Miller avait su aussi se mettre au service des autres, notamment en coéditant, avec Martin E. Huld et Karlene Jones-Bley, d'importants Mélanges en l'honneur de James P. Mallory .Dean Miller est décédé le 28 février 2019, à l'âge de quatre-vingt- sept ans. C'est pour rendre hommage à sa belle carrière que nous avons souhaité réunir et offrir ces modestes mélanges, en remerciement à un chercheur qui nous a tous si souvent inspirés.Patrice LAJOYE
