Oliver Twist survit au milieu de ses compagnons d'infortune. Mal nourri, exploité, il est placé chez Mr Sowerberry, fabricant de cercueils et croque-mort de son état. Là encore, il ne connaît que privations et mauvais traitements. Oliver endure tout, jusqu'au jour où une provocation d'un apprenti le pousse à se battre puis à s'enfuir vers Londres.
Épuisé, affamé, il est recueilli par une bande de jeunes voleurs qui travaillent pour le vieux Fagin. Entre Sick, Nancy, Monks, Charley Bates, Toby Crackit, Finaud et les autres, Oliver découvre un monde cruel où seules comptent la ruse et la force.
Après une arrestation pour un vol qu'il n'a pas commis, Oliver se retrouve chez Mr Brownlow qui le traite comme un fils. Mais la bande de jeunes voleurs le retrouve et le force à participer à un cambriolage qui rate et où Oliver se blesse. Heureusement, la famille Maylie le prend en pitié et s'occupe de lui. Plus tard, il parviendra à retourner chez Mr Brownlow et apprendra d'où il vient.
Oliver Twist est l'un des romans les plus connus de Charles Dickens. il a été publié sous forme de feuilleton hedbomadaire entre février 1837 et avril 1839 dans la revue Bentley's Miscellany dont Dickens fut le premier éditeur1, il raconte la vie d'un jeune orphelin à Londres.

A propos de l'Auteur:
Charles John Huffam Dickens, né à Landport, près de Portsmouth (Royaume Unis), le 7 février 1812, mort à Gad's Hill Place dans le Kent, le 9 juin 1870, est un romancier et critique social anglais.
Il est considéré comme le plus grand romancier de l'époque victorienne. Dès la publication de ses premiers écrits, Les Papiers posthumes du Pickwick Club et Oliver Twist en 1836, il est devenu immensément célèbre et sa popularité n'a cessé de s'accroître au fil de ses publications.
De son vivant et après sa mort, la critique l'a généralement acclamé comme l'un des plus grands auteurs de la littérature. Ses romans et ses nouvelles comptent toujours parmi les plus lus et sont régulièrement réédités et adaptés pour la radio, le cinéma ou la télévision.
Un Conte de Noël, publié en 1843, reste sans doute l'un de ses livres ayant connu le plus vaste retentissement international, mais l'ensemble de son oeuvre a été apprécié par de nombreux écrivains de grand renom, par exemple William Makepeace Thackeray, Léon Tolstoï, Gilbert Keith Chesterton ou George Orwell.
Tous ont loué son réalisme, son esprit comique, son art de la caractérisation et l'acuité de sa satire. Certains, cependant, comme Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde ou Henry James, lui ont reproché de manquer de régularité dans le style, de privilégier la veine sentimentale de façon parfois trop appuyée et des analyses psychologiques qu'ils jugent souvent superficielles.
Dickens a, dès la parution de ses romans, été traduit en de nombreuses langues, les premières versions françaises ayant toutes reçu son aval.
Son oeuvre a été et reste abondamment adaptée pour la scène, théâtre et music-hall, l'écran, la radio et la télévision.
