About the Book

My husband, Mark, used to tell our children bedtime stories. This was their time alone with daddy and my time to relax. I don't know exactly when it happened; but, one day I heard the kids talking about "Old Red." Mark had started making up his own stories. He had imagined a wretched bird named "Old Red" who constantly caused trouble for the children. When our kids became too old for bedtime stories and were nearing the age of taking the ACT or SAT, Mark decided to write a book about Old Red. He felt that it would be beneficial to the reader (hopefully our children) to include words that might appear on scholastic achievement tests, their meanings, and historical facts that people might like to know. Tragically, my husband passed away before "Old Red: The Beginning" was published, so this book is in honor of him.
About the Author: Mark A. Shawver was born in Charleston, WV in 1955. He attended East Bank High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from West Virginia Technical College. He earned his Master's in Business Administration from Regent University. In his spare time, Mark played tennis, taught Royal Rangers, did woodworking, wrote leadership books and stories. Mark had a tremendous imagination. He loved his family and always put them above himself. He was a very unique man. The following is a letter that was sent to the family upon Mark's death. It describes him very well. "Charlene, Jonathon, Jennifer, Jeremiah, Jacqueline, and Clara, There are no words to express the pain of your loss. Mark was a faithful, Godly, loving, caring, giving, generous, and selfless man in every way. He had right values, cared for the interests of others, and lived integrity. He kept his word, was trustworthy, logical, sensible, dedicated, and loyal. He was an encourager, he was considerate, he was engaging. I can't say enough about your dad; your husband, Charlene. I considered Mark a friend and will always remember his deep love for you, his family, his devotion to his wife and marriage, and his living life for God. We will see him again! His passing brings rich awareness of the author's pen, 'And, when this life is over, we shall wear a crown, in the new Jerusalem...' Much love, Pastor Joe and Renee"
