Der schottische Schriftsteller Robert Louis Stevenson, geboren am 13. November 1850 in Edinburgh, gilt als einer der Klassiker der Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Stevensons Literatur konzentriert sich auf Fantasy- und Abenteuerromane, was zu einer hervorragenden Produktion führte, die ihm populären Erfolg einbrachte. Werke wie Treasure Island (1883), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) oder Black Arrow (1888) wurden in Dutzende von Sprachen übersetzt und bei zahlreichen Gelegenheiten für Film, Theater oder Fernsehen adaptiert.
Aufgrund seiner anfälligen Gesundheit bereiste Stevenson die Welt auf der Suche nach einem gesünderen Klima und wurde ein Experte für Reiseliteratur und Essays.
