Le protagoniste d'Olalla est un soldat blessé, qui se rend en Espagne pour récupérer. Il y rencontre une jeune femme mystérieuse et charmante, Olalla, la fille de son hôte, et membre d'une famille qui cache un secret abominable.
C'est l'histoire d'un amour impossible dans un décor naturel aux fortes tonalités romantiques, où se croisent deux autres motifs: une réflexion sur l'âme et le thème de la lycanthropie. Le manoir d'Olalla se situe dans un autre temps, dans l'histoire d'une lignée fermée au sein de laquelle elle n'est qu'un dernier moment de lucidité. La fille est jalouse de ses propres yeux, de ses cheveux et de ses mains, et même de sa propre âme. Chaque partie et chaque moment de sa vie ont déjà vécu et appartiennent sans référence au cycle fermé de l'histoire de son peuple. Ainsi, le passé déborde de son corps et s'empare de ses sens, comme si les morts hésitaient à laisser son sang. On parle de l'âme, mais l'âme est dans la lignée, dit Olalla, qui ne peut délivrer dans l'amour une âme détachée de sa propre conscience.
A propos de l'auteur:
L'écrivain écossais Robert Louis Stevenson, né à Édimbourg le 13 novembre 1850, est considéré comme l'un des classiques de la littérature du XIXe siècle.
La littérature de Stevenson se concentre sur les romans fantastiques et d'aventure, résultant en une excellente production qui lui vaudra un succès populaire. Des oeuvres telles que Treasure Island (1883), The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) ou Black Arrow (1888) ont été traduites dans des dizaines de langues et adaptées pour le cinéma, le théâtre ou la télévision dans une multitude d'occasions.
En raison de sa santé fragile, Stevenson a parcouru le monde à la recherche de climats plus sains, devenant un expert en littérature et essais de voyage.
Ses dernières années se passent aux îles Samoa, où il meurt le 3 décembre 1894.
