La Paille et le Grain, paru au debut de l'annee 1975 chez Flammarion, rassemble des textes de Francois Mitterrand, issus essentiellement des chroniques pour l'hebdomadaire socialiste L'Unite, ecrits entre son accession a la tete du Parti socialiste au congres d'Epinay en juin 1971 et sa defaite de justesse a l'election presidentielle de mai 1974.Document historique, l'ouvrage permet de suivre la reaffirmation du leadership de Francois Mitterrand sur la gauche francaise.Il y apparait en effet comme un opposant combatif, polemiquant avec la droite au pouvoir, et comme un rassembleur negociant aprement le Programme commun avec le Parti communiste.Il se presente egalement comme homme d'Etat, revenant sur sa relation avec de Gaulle, reagissant aux evenements internationaux (la normalisation en Tchecoslovaquie, le coup d'Etat au Chili, la guerre du Kippour...), narrant ses rencontres avec des chefs d'Etat ou leaders etrangers (Olof Palme, Golda Meir, Ceausescu...).Mais le succes public et critique de l'ouvrage tint aussi a ses qualites litteraires, qui lui valurent un Apostrophes special en fevrier 1975, et a la revelation d'une part d'intimite. Au gre des pages, quand l'actualite lui en laisse le temps, la plume de Francois Mitterrand se fait a la fois plus personnelle et plus poetique, pour evoquer ses amities avec les ecrivains Violet Trefusis, Benoite Groult ou Claude Manceron, son gout pour les atlas ou ses promenades en foret dans les Landes ou le Morvan.L'Abeille et l'architecte. Un curieux titre pour un ouvrage insolite, publie en 1978 chez Flammarion, qui s'inscrit dans une filiation directe avec La Paille et le Grain (1975).Titre curieux car il s'inspire d'un celebre passage du Capital de Karl Marx. D'architecte comme d'abeille nulle trace pourtant dans ce livre. Quant aux references au philosophe ou au marxisme, elles sont anodines.Ouvrage insolite parce qu'il rassemble des textes pour la plupart tires de Ma part de verite, bloc-notes que le premier secretaire signe regulierement dans les colonnes de L'Unite, l'hebdomadaire du Parti socialiste. Des billets, ecrits entre janvier 1975 et janvier 1978 sous le joug de l'actualite, que Francois Mitterrand selectionnera, rectifiera, enrichir consciencieusement avant de les livrer au-dela du cercle de connivence des simples militants. Insolite aussi parce l'auteur navigue sans cesse entre plusieurs genres litteraires, entre differentes postures. Il se fait ainsi homme politique lorsqu'il critique l'action du gouvernement ou promeut le programme du PS; homme d'Etat lorsqu'il raconte ses rencontres avec Leonid Brejnev ou Henry Kissinger; homme engage lorsqu'il denonce le sort des etrangers sans papiers ou defend le fait palestinien; homme de culture lorsqu'il evoque le poete Pablo Neruda ou le compositeur Mikis Theodorakis; homme sensible enfin lorsqu'il livre ses souvenirs de jeunesse comme ses amities.
