La Rose au poing (1973) Cet ouvrage est le premier de Francois Mitterrand en tant que Premier secretaire du Parti Socialiste qu'il a conquis au Congres d'Epinay des 11 et 13 juin 1971. Il a ainsi deux buts principaux. Le premier est d'affermir pour son auteur une stature de leader du socialisme (souvenons-nous qu'il n'a adhere a la SFIO devenue PS qu'au moment d'Epinay). Certes, son leadership sur la gauche remonte a 1965 avec sa candidature a l'election presidentielle (a laquelle il accorde toute sa place) qui avait rallie a lui tant les Radicaux que les Communistes. Dirigeant legitime du PS, il n'en est pas moins conteste par une partie de ses cadres historiques. Comme le rappelle Jean Lacouture, Guy Mollet disait par exemple de lui: Mitterrand n'est pas devenu socialiste, il a appris a parler socialiste... L'exaltation de l'histoire socialiste et de ses acquis sociaux est ici parfaitement maitrisee, inscrivant Francois Mitterrand dans la longue lignee des figures mythiques du PS, de Guesde a Blum en passant par Jaures. Il entend egalement forger un nouvel imaginaire qui reancre le PS a gauche, tout en se montrant ouvert a l'ensemble de l'electorat (symbole de la rose et du poing). Le second objectif s'adresse plus generalement au grand public. Le programme commun de gouvernement signe le 27 juin 1972 avec le PCF et les Radicaux de gauche a surpris ceux qui s'etaient habitues a une SFIO en decrepitude avancee et plus soucieuse de nouer des accords au centre qu'avec le reste de la gauche. Les electeurs les plus moderes qui ont pu etre seduits par le discours de Francois Mitterrand en 1965 s'inquietent donc, pour certains, de ce qui peut apparaitre comme une radicalisation. C'est cette image que Francois Mitterrand entend repousser en distinguant le PCF de l'URSS, et en montrant que le PS se veut avant tout le defenseur de la liberte. Francois Mitterrand entend montrer qu'il a parfaitement integre son role de premier opposant au gouvernement de droite, mais que le PS se veut aussi un parti de gouvernement. D'ou de longs developpements sur l'economie et la maniere de la gerer pour un PS au pouvoir. Un ouvrage qui se veut donc essentiel a la comprehension du leadership que Francois Mitterrand va reussir a imposer au sein du Parti socialiste. Ici et maintenant (1980) En introduction de Ici et maintenant, publie chez Fayard, Francois Mitterrand avertit le lecteur: ce livre n'est pas un manifeste mais un ouvrage de reflexions, celles-ci n'engagent que lui et non le parti. Une facon de prendre date alors que s'annonce la fin de siecle et son commencement . Bref, ce livre n'aurait rien de politique. Et pourtant! Sa date de sortie elle-meme nous amene a penser le contraire. C'est en effet le 8 novembre 1980 que les Francais peuvent se le procurer en librairie, le jour meme ou celui qui est alors Premier secretaire d'un Parti socialiste transforme, annonce sa candidature. Dans ce livre, Francois Mitterrand renoue avec le genre politique et l'entretien qu'il avait delaisse dans ses deux derniers ouvrages, plus litteraires. Il a choisi pour la replique un journaliste certes de gauche mais proche de Michel Rocard: Guy Claisse, editorialiste au quotidien Le Matin. Si le resultat de leur echange n'est pas un manifeste - au sens de programme -, le futur President y developpe ses analyses sur tous les sujets du moment, politique exterieure, interieure, etat de la gauche, rapport de force avec la droite, etc. En cela, le livre est passionnant dans la mesure ou il marque a quelques mois de son entree a l'Elysee l'etat de reflexion personnel de l'auteur sur les dossiers qu'il aura a gerer. Clairement, le candidat socialiste cherche ici, a sa maniere, a entrer en campagne. Face a un PCF qui a rompu l'union de la gauche, a un courant rocardien qui conteste sa strategie et son leadership au sein du PS, a un peuple de gauche desespere par cette situation, apres que tous les grands partis de l'opposition aient publie leurs programmes, ce texte pose la premiere etape d'une dynamique qui devait mener son auteur a faite du pouvoir.
