Mais quoique dépourvu de cette étincelle divine, il n'est pas cependant impossible de se faire une place honorable dans les lettres ou dans les arts. Une imitation judicieuse, un goût pur, un vers élégant peuvent compenser les avantages que seul possède le génie. On voit alors ces hommes remarquables à tant de titres se choisir parmi les étoiles qui brillent dans leur firmament, un guide, un ami pour appuyer leurs pas incertains par leurs propres forces. C'est ainsi du moins qu'agit Boileau, l'un des plus sages écrivains du XVIIe siècle. Ce fut Horace qu'il prit pour soutien dans sa carrière; c'est sur lui qu'il fixa ses regards et modela ses actions. Toute son ambition fut d'approcher de ce grand maître.
La chose n'était pas facile: approcher Horace, même de loin, c'est une entreprise hardie -- j'allais dire téméraire. Quel Protée aux mille formes que ce poète tour à tour badin et sublime, rieur et mélancolique, sceptique et croyant ! Quelle prodigieuse mobilité dans cet esprit qui unit la finesse et la pureté des formes à la profondeur et à l'étendue des idées ! Il sourit au printemps près d'éclore, et l'acclame de ses joyeux refrains; il raille l'inquiétude des mortels, et soupire un moment après sur l'inconstance de leur fortune. Il se joue aujourd'hui sur le mode anacréontique des grands noms du peuple-roi; vous le verrez demain saisir la lyre de Pindare et faire vibrer de ses plus fins accents la corde patriotique. Il a jeté son bouclier à Philippes, il encense Auguste avec la naïveté et l'étourderie d'un vrai poète; cela ne l'empêchera pas de pleurer sur Brutus, et, le verre en main, de célébrer la vertu de Caton. La nature s'anime sous son léger pinceau. Il revêt des plus brillantes couleurs les sujets les plus arides et ses vers semblent tourbillonner devant nous comme un choeur de Bacchantes enivrées dans le silence de la nuit. Délire orphique, boutades de moraliste, orgies épicuriennes, rien ne lui est étranger: il transforme en or tous les métaux qu'il touche, et il les touche tous. C'est une manière de La Fontaine, grand enfant simple et crédule le matin, moqueur et libertin le soir, également susceptible d'enthousiasme et de découragement, passant d'une émotion à l'autre sans transition avec une incroyable célérité, vivant et mourant en poète, c'est à dire en rêveur, sur la tombe duquel on pourrait graver les vers de Régnier:
Je vécus sans nul pensement
Me laissant aller doucement
À la bonne loi naturelle.
