Le P. Bourdaloue continua quelques années à prècher en province mais on ne tarda pas à l'en retirer dès qu'on le crut en état de paroître dans Pa ris. II y vint, et ce fut là que la Providence ouvrit à son zèle le plus vaste et le plus beau champ. Quoique l'on attendît beaucoup de lui, il est vrai qu'il surpassa encore toutes les espérances qu'on en avoit conçues. Il y a des suc cès si extraordinaires et des mérites si universellement reconnus, qu'il est permis à quiconque d'en parler, sans craindre ni d'aller au-delà de l'idée commune ni de blesser certaines biénséances. A peine eut - il paru dans l'é glise de la maison professe des jésuites que de tout Paris et de la cour mème une foule prodigieuse d'auditeurs y accourut. Une réputation si prompte est quelquefois sujette à dégénérer celle du P. Bourdaloue crût toujours d'un sermon à l'autre; et plus on l'en'tendit plus on eut de goût pour l'entendre.

Aussi avoit - il dans un éminent degré tout ce qui peut former un parfait prédicateur. Il reçut de la nature un fonds de raison qui joint à une imagi nation vive et pénétrante, lui faisoit trouver d'abord dans chaque chose le solide et le vrai. C'étoit là proprement son caractère et ce fut, avec les ln mières de la foi cette raison droite qui le dirigea dans tous les sujets de la morale chrétienne, et dans les mystères de la religion qu'il eut à traiter. C'est aussi ce qui donne à ses sermons une force toujours égale. Leur beauté ne consiste point précisément en quelques endroits bien amenés où l'orateur épuise tout son art et tout son feu mais dans un corps de discours où tout se soutient, parce que tout est lié et bien assorti. Ses divisionsjustes ses raison nements suivis et convaincants ses mouvements pathétiques, ses réflexions judicieuses et d'un sens exquis, tout va à son but; et, malgré l'abondance des choses que lui fournissoit une admirable fécondité, et qu'il savoit si bien enfermer dans un mème dessein il ne s'écarte pas un moment de sa propo sitiou. Q'uae pensée soit commune il ne la rejette point c'est assez qu'elle soit vraie et qu'elle lui serve de preuve. Il l'approfondit et il la creuse, et par - là mème la met dans un teljour que de commune qu'elle étoit elle lui devient particulière de sorte qu'en pensant ce que les autres ont pensé avant lui il pense néanmoins tout autrement que les autres. Qu'il s'oppose une diffi culté il y fait une réponse à laquelle il n'y a point de réplique; et quelquefois il tire de l'objection mème de quoi la résoudre, et il convainc l'auditeur par ses propres sentiments. S'il cite l'ecritureou les Pères il les cite en maître, jusqu'à faire le précis de tout un traité pour l'appliquer à la vérité qu'il pré che. Du reste ce ne sont point tant les paroles des Pères qu'il rapporte, que leur doctrine et leurs raisons. Il les développe, et surtout il les place si à pro pos et les fait tellement entrer dans son sujet qu'on diroit que les Pères n'ont parlé que pour ln1. Des auteurs sacrés il eut à ce qu'il paraît, plus assidu ment devant les yeux lsaie et saint Paul; et des Pères Tertullien saint Au gustin et saint Jean Chrysostome, parce qu'il y trouvoit plus d'énergie et plus de grandeur.
