Sainte Catherine est source d'incessant emerveillement. Jeune femme pauvre et analphabete, elle meurt a 33 ans mais a la tete d'une oeuvre dont il n'existe aucun equivalent. Nee dans un siecle de dechirures et de guerres tandis que la peste noire decimait le tiers de la population europeenne, Catherine est denuee de formation ou d'experience, elle ne connait pas le monde, mais elle est habitee par la puissance meme du Verbe. Entree dans le Tiers-Ordre dominicain, par la force de sa parole et de ses Lettres elle s'adresse aux potentats, et, malgre sa sante precaire, obtient des resultats politiques capitaux, comme le retour de la Papaute d'Avignon a Rome. Peu de temps avant sa mort elle dicta a une vitesse surhumaine les traites qui composent son celebre Dialogue leur envergure philosophique et theologique est telle qu'elle domine et depasse l'histoire de la pensee. Catherine impressionne tellement les Papes, les cardinaux et les princes qu'ils la choisissent pour conseillere et lui confient la destinee des Etats. Le Dialogue acquiert d'emblee une immense popularite et devient le livre de chevet de l'Eglise universelle. Rares sont les classiques qui, a travers le monde, eurent un si considerable impact. Veritable embleme de l'impossibilite faite evidence, Catherine est l'une des figures les plus impressionnantes de l'Histoire. Sa pensee, sa vigueur, sa vie et son style sont si superieurs que c'est son oeuvre qui, en meme temps que celle de Dante, fonde la parole toscane et se trouve ainsi a l'origine de la litterature italienne. Nous avons voulu que ce volume rendit parfaitement perceptible la langue de cette femme de feu qui gouverna l'Eglise par la force de sa saintete et qui gouverne les coeurs par l'intensite du sien. Les traductions du Dialogue et des Lettres ont ete choisies en ce sens: celui de la fidelite. Elles sont precedees par d'amples introductions historiques et critiques. Le volume contient egalement deux traductions des Oraisons, dont celle de Louis Chardon, l'un des plus grands stylistes du XVIIe siecle. Son tres beau texte etait introuvable depuis pres de quatre siecles. Nous en avons renouvele ici l'etablissement; Chardon est a sainte Catherine ce qu'Amyot fut a Plutarque. Ce volume s'acheve avec la grande biographie que le confesseur de Catherine, Raymond de Capoue, lui consacra. Dieu a choisi ce qui est pauvre pour confondre ce qui est fort , dit l'Ecriture: le prodigieux genie et la somptueuse saintete de l'innocente de Sienne firent d'une analphabete aux livres admirables la premiere femme Docteur de l'Eglise. A la veille du IIIe millenaire, elle fut proclamee patronne de l'Europe. Son oeuvre est mondialement presente mais plus rien ne permettait au public francais d'y avoir veritablement acces. Cette injustice est reparee.
