Dans la ville d'echbourg vivait, il y a plus de cent ans, un tr�s-sage et parfait honn�te homme, nomm� Jacques Rode. Il �tait pauvre et fort jeune encore lorsqu'il vint � Echbourg pour se mettre en appren tissage chez le jardinier du ch�teau seigneurial. Ses excellentes dispositions, son bon caract�re, l'adresse avec laquelle il s'acquillait de tout ce qu'on lui com mandait, et sa figure agr�able, lui gagn�rent la bien veillance de ses ma�tres. On le chargea de diverses petites fonctions dans le ch�teau et lorsque le comte, qui �tait encore jeune a cette �poque, se mit � voyager, il pla�a Jacques parmi les gens de sa suite. Jacques sut profiter de ces voyages pour cultiver son esprit, polir ses mani�res, acqu�rir des con naissances utiles; et, ce qui est bien plus pr�cieux encore il en rapporta la bont� et la droiture de son coeur, que le commerce du monde n'avait pu alt�rer.

Au retour, le comte songea � r�compenser Jacques de ses fid�les services en lui donnant une place avan tageuse. Il lui proposa d'abord les fonctions d'inten dant de son h�tel dans la capitale; mais le brave homme n'aspirait qu'au tranquille bonheur de la vie champ�tre; et comme, a cette �poque, le bail d'un petit domaine du comte, � Bchbourg venait d'expi rer, Jacques le pria de le lui affermer. Le g�n�reux comte lui en fit une concession gratuite et viag�re et lui assura en outre toute la provision de bl� et de bois annuellement n�cessaire a son m�nage. Jacques se maria � Echbourg; il v�cut du revenu de ce petit domaine, qui consistait en une maison nette fort jolie et un grand et beau jardin, dont une moiti� �tait f'plant�e d'excellents arbres fruitiers, et l'autre moiti� formait un potager produisant les meilleurs l�gumes de toute la contr�e.
