Seit dem Beginn der Reflexion von Glaubensinhalten durch das fruhe Christentum kann von einem wechselseitigen Verhaltnis von Philosophie und Theologie gesprochen werden. Christliche Glaubenslehre, die ihren Ausgang in der glaubigen Annahme geoffenbarter Satze nimmt, und Metaphysik, die als prima philosophia die Universalitat der Vernunft vertritt, haben in Gott den gleichen Gegenstand ihres Fragens, treten dadurch in Konkurrenz zueinander und pragen zugleich einander bei ihrer Selbstkonstitution. Dabei hat sich die Theologie stets an jeweils gultigen philosophischen Rationalitatsstandards orientiert, um ihren Anspruch auf Rationalitat zu begrunden und ihr Profil als Wissenschaft zu gewinnen, zu verteidigen und zu modifizieren. Andererseits ubt die kontinuierliche Rezeption und Tradierung philosophischer Inhalte durch die Theologie massgeblichen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Philosophie und deren grundlegende Bedeutung fur die europaische Wissenskultur aus. Die vorliegende wissenschaftstheoretische Untersuchung weist dies an pragenden philosophischen und theologischen Positionen von der Spatantike bis in die Gegenwart nach und leistet damit einen Beitrag zu einem Thema, dessen Bedeutung fur die Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte nicht hoch genug eingeschatzt werden kann. Die gemeinsame Geschichte von Philosophie und Theologie nimmt ihren Anfang im Ubertritt des fruhen Christentums in den Raum der hellenistisch gepragten Kultur des Mittelmeerraums und - aus theologischer Sicht - der damit verbundenen Ubernahme philosophischer Elemente durch einen christlichen Glauben, der so allererst eine christliche Glaubenslehre ausbildet, wie dies etwa bei Augustinus mit neuplatonischen Aussagen praktiziert wird. Im Mittelalter erreicht die Rezeption philosophischer Rationalitatsstandards in der Theologie, die sich erstmals als Wissenschaft begreift, ihren ersten Hohepunkt in der theologischen Auseinandersetzung mit den artes liberales und im 13. Jahrhundert mit der Apodeiktik, der aristotelischen Wissenschaftslehre, insbesondere durch Thomas von Aquin und Johannes Duns Scotus. Die Transzendentalphilosophie Kants beschleunigt und verscharft, indem sie metaphysikkritische Elemente der philosophischen Tradition zuspitzt und auf eine neue Basis stellt, den Prozess der Ablosung der Philosophie von der Theologie sowie - umgekehrt - der programmatischen "Entwissenschaftlichung" der Theologie, die unter dem Einfluss wissenschaftstheoretischer Ansatze des 20. Jahrhundert weiter voranschreitet. Es bleibt der Auftrag an die Philosophie, Rationalitats- und Wissenschaftsstandards zu reflektieren und gegebenenfalls zu re-formulieren. Und es bleibt die Aufgabe der Theologie, angemessene Antworten auf diese Vorgaben zu finden, will sie ihren Anspruch, Wissenschaft zu sein, aufrecht erhalten. Mogliche Referenzen seitens der Philosophie bei diesem Unterfangen konnen in der Hermeneutik, der Sprachanalyse und Sprachphilosophie gesehen werden.
