Esta e a historia da minha familia. Comeca em 1874, com a chegada do meu avo ao Brasil. Procedente de Portugal, aos 25 anos, estabeleceu-se no Recife e, do casamento com Rosa Pimentel Pego, nasceram tres filhos e uma filha. Mudaram para Ico, sertao do Ceara, tornando-se fazendeiros. No final do seculo XIX, foram duramente castigados por uma longa seca. Morreram as plantas, os animais, o rio e o poco. Meu avo resistiu. Entao, morreu minha avo. Vencido, meu avo escolheu os seringais do Amazonas como a Terra da Promissao. Confiou Julia, sua unica filha, aos cuidados das freiras do Mosteiro de Olinda. Com os tres filhos, ainda pequenos, Jose Maria, o mais velho, Joao Maria e o cacula, Malaquias, 4 anos, seguiu Julia. A travessia do sertao ate Fortaleza, a pe e em lombo de burro, durou 34 dias de incertezas e sofrimento. A sede e a fome foram companheiras sempre presentes. Viajando de navio ate Belem, ai permaneceu a espera de outro que os conduzisse a Santarem. Havia poucos barcos e muitos aventureiros que se destinavam ao Amazonas, todos com o sonho do enriquecimento facil. O Canal de Panama estava sendo concluido, dispensando empregados, na sua maioria caribenhos, que vinham se somar aos que fugiam do sertao, reunindo-se nas pracas de Belem, a espera de navio para Manaus ou de vaga em um hotel. Havia, tambem, os procedentes de outros paises, comerciantes, aventureiros, e os funcionarios publicos em transito. Belem nao dispunha de hoteis suficientes, o que dificultava a vida dos emigrantes, todos preocupados com a recente epidemia de colera que, embora ja dominada, deixava o medo estampado em muitos rostos. Depois de meses, finalmente meu avo, seu Miguel, se estabeleceu em Coari, no rio Solimoes. Ali, ao revidar uma agressao, cometeu um crime e fugiu para Manaus, remando durante nove dias. Enfrentou mosquitos, o sol tropical inclemente, tempestades e o medo de ser preso. Chegou a Manaus e, sob a protecao de conterraneos, seguiu para Portugal, de onde jamais voltaria. Julia fora esquecida em Olinda. Os meninos, abandonados, tiveram que sobreviver na floresta. Paradoxalmente, o mesmo rio que os livrou da morte pela sede, muitos anos depois, cobrou seu tributo: Jose Maria morreu afogado, durante uma tempestade, no lago de Coari. Em 2008, olhando o mapa da regiao de Coari, identifiquei uma propriedade com o nome de Fazenda Santa Rosa e imaginei que poderia ter pertencido ao meu avo e esse nome, uma homenagem a sua mulher, sepultada no sertao do Ceara. Este livro, embora permeado de alguma fantasia, e baseado em fatos verdadeiros, ocorridos em seringais e beiradoes da Amazonia e, como um barco, transporta seus passageiros - meus leitores - pelo Rio Amazonas, apresentando a eles o verde denso e diverso da floresta, as varias cores de suas aguas, seus barcos "regionais," com redes trancadas, o cheiro e o som de seus motores a vapor... e muito mais.
