De um modo geral, apresentará de forma paralela ao Pentateuco os acontecimentos compreendidos entre a criação do ser humano e os últimos dias de vida de Josué.O Livro do Justo se refere diversas vezes ao Livro da Lei do Senhor (cinco primeiros livros da Bíblia) e é mencionado de forma direta no Antigo Testamento em duas ocasiões, como veremos a seguir: "E o sol se deteve, e a lua parou, até que o povo se vingou de seus inimigos. Isto não está escrito no livro de Jasher?O sol, pois, se deteve no meio do céu, e não se apressou a pôr-se, quase um dia inteiro." (Josué 10:13)"Dizendo ele que ensinassem aos filhos de Judá o uso do arco. Eis que está escrito no livro de Jasher." (II Samuel 1:18)Além das passagens bíblicas mencionadas anteriormente, o Novo Testamento possui pelo menos uma referência indireta ao Livro do Justo. Em sua segunda carta a Timóteo, o apóstolo Paulo afirma que nos últimos dias sobrevirão tempos difíceis, pois "como Janes e Jambres resistiram a Moisés, assim também estes resistem à verdade, sendo homens corruptos de entendimento e réprobos quanto à fé". (II Timóteo 3:8)Considerando que estes homens não são mencionados de forma explícita em nenhuma outra parte das Sagradas Escrituras, é possível depreender que Paulo havia lido o Livro do Justo, pois conhecia a seguinte passagem nele contida: "E quando eles tinham ido, Faraó mandou chamar a Balaão, o mágico, e Yanes (Janes) e Yambres (Jambres), seus filhos, e a todos os mágicos e ilusionistas e os conselheiros que pertenciam ao rei, e todos eles vieram e sentaram-se diante do rei." (Livro do Justo 79:27)É importante ressaltar que o Livro do Justo merece receber o título de apócrifo, tendo em vista que possui alguns trechos que se assemelham a lendas. Essas passagens de teor duvidoso encontradas no Livro do Justo são provavelmente resultado de adições feitas por interferência de crenças da época e da própria tradição oral dos hebreus.Apesar disso, a cronologia dos fatos narrados no Livro do Justo está em harmonia com outras fontes históricas confiáveis, como é o caso do Talmude e a Seder Olam Rabbah (livro de datas dos judeus). Ademais, existem diversas passagens bíblicas que são melhor compreendidas através da análise comparativa das narrativas paralelas encontradas no Livro do Justo.Um episódio que ilustra de forma bastante oportuna a relevância do Livro do Justo e sua utilidade para a melhor compreensão das narrativas bíblicas é a viagem do patriarca Jacó e seu encontro com Esaú quando regressava para a terra de Canaã.
