Da han var ung, var han forelsket i en smuk kvinde, men da hans halvbror Karl blev gjort til enearving, slog hun kløerne i den rige bror i stedet. Hendes svigt ødelagde Ellens far og forholdet mellem brødrene og Ellens far flygtede til Amerika. Men han har på sit dødsleje modtaget et brev, som har gjort ham dybt urolig og han beder Ellen om at rejse til Danmark og råde bod på den uret, han gjorde sin bror. Ellen, der har arvet millioner efter sin far, nægter at tilgive sin farbror, og drømmer om at hævne den uret, hendes tante har begået. Hun beder derfor sin plejesøster Betty om at bytte roller, så Betty spiller den rige arving og Ellen den fattige slægtning, for på den måde at finde svar på, hvad der skete for så mange år siden. Men mødet med farbroren og hans to sønner, vælter de unge pigers planer, for hjertet kan man ikke altid styre. Bogen er skrevet i og med samtidens sprog og retskrivning. Johanne Sofie Korch (1882-1950). Dansk forfatter. Debuterede i 1927 med en novelle i Ugens Nyheder, og begyndte efterfølgende at skrive bøger for unge kvinder. Hun fik sit folkelige gennembrud i 1936 med romanen "Efter vinter kommer vår". Hun er i dag mindre kendt end sin bror Morten Korch, men med sine realistiske kvindeskildringer og mere raffinerede psykologiske overvejelser overgik hun ham ofte som forfatter og i midten af 1940erne også i salgstal.
