Un dramma che dovrebbe essere, per necessit�, sviluppo di energie individuali, e che esorta a frenare appunto ed a spegnere persino coteste energie; un intreccio di azioni immaginato per con dannare appunto il vigore spontaneo e tutte le esuberanze dell'agire; l'arte, liberissi-ma e sbrigliata figlia del cielo, fatta messaggio di una ferrea dominazione degli istinti e del volere degli uomini; un mondo di fantasia che minaccia immergersi in un mondo di logica; un Memento mori instancabilmente ripetuto come norma di vita. La sentenza che alleggeriva l'uomo d'ogni cruccio e d'ogni preoccu pazione per i giorni che seguiranno al giorno corrente: Chi vuol esser lieto sia, Il di doman non � certezza, ora si condanna come sacrilega. Non trastullarti, non ti concedere detizia e gioia. Dormente, pensa al gran risveglio, quando il sogno avr� fine e le tenebre ca dranno e la gelida fronte sar� tocca dal soli nuovo che sorger� per non aver pi� tramonto e notte. Imponti il sacrificio dei tuoi desideri aneli; scaccia dal cuore le vane concupiscenze; del mondo gi� non afferreresti che larve vane, chimere, ombre fuggenti; non ti vinca, non ti seduca il temporaneo, costrutto di immagini e di sembianze fallaci. Acudamos a lo eterno.

Pi� che da una visione rapida, popolata in un baleno di fan tasmi che corrono baldanzosi alla vita, il poeta � colpito dal pensiero all'eternoche lo avvince e lo soggioga tiranno. Ma e necessit� ch'egli pur poggi l'edificio che solleva alla virt� del sogno umano, simbolo degli eterni destini, sulla base non mai vacillante del reale, ch'egli animi di concrete figure il dramma risolutam-ente concepito per astrarre da tutte le lusinghe mondane, da quanto accarezza il senso ed ha fascia corporea, per additare quell'unica sostanza di vita tutta pos-ta fuori del visibile e del tangibile, nella solitudine assoluta dello spirito. Perch� la gran lezione avesse efficacia, e scotesse il sogno della vita, aprendo gli occhi su quanto non appar vano e transitorio, bisognava togli-ere il dormiente dalla umile cerchia in cui lo poneva la fiaba antica, per collocarlo ben sollevato sulle turbe, dove pi� raggia l'umanit� del suo potere temuto ed effimero, investirlo della dignit� di principe, muoverlo alla conquista di un regno; bisognava altres� che rivelasse, aperto alla vita appena, istinti fieri e selvaggi, violentissimi desideri, una smania irrefrenabile di'dominare e di soggioga - re, di agire a suo capriccio sulla gran scena del mondo, per poi arrendersi al pensiero che questa scena non � alfine che una ridda di fantasmi e d'ombre, che tra vita sognata e vita vissuta non pu� essere divario. Dovr� ammansarsi alfine, sedare tutti i tu multi, spegnere tutti i desideri in cuore, commiserare le povere vane chimer'e che circondari l'uomo in terra, e avviarsi contrito, risoluto a bene operare per non ricadere in altri deliri, all'eterna vita, quella sola che non ha in s� la morte e il sogno.
