En 1980, au moment de la parution de "En lisant en ecrivant", Angelo Rinaldi, dans « L’express », souligna que Julien Gracq figurait parmi les contrebandiers habiles a faire passer les « frontieres separant les epoques ». Plus de 40 ans apres, ce constat reste d’actualite, comme si le temps avait eu peu de prise sur ses fragments, toujours devant nous. Ce qui est frappant avec les textes inedits de Julien Gracq, rassembles ici, par Bernhild Boie, son editrice en Pleiade, c’est qu’il est aussi etonnant dans le grand angle (ses centres d’interet sont aussi bien historiques que geographiques) que dans le plan rapproche (tous ses textes sur des paysages ou des evenements) ou le gros plan (certains textes sur des ecrivains, des villes ou des phenomenes litteraires). Gracq est un observateur penetrant, sensible, perspicace. Aucune nostalgie ou lamentation dans cette vision du monde. Avec une liberte de ton et de regard inimitables, il nous invite a revoir a neuf nos propres jugements sur l’histoire, les ecrivains, les paysages, l’acceleration du temps, la deterioration de la nature, le passage des saisons, les jardins potagers, la vieillesse, le bonheur de flaner comme celui de lire. Cette lucidite sereine donne d’ailleurs a certains fragments une allure prophetique : « (...) la Terre a perdu sa solidite et son assise, cette colline, aujourd’hui, on peut la raser a volonte, ce fleuve l’assecher, ces nuages les dissoudre. Le moment approche ou l’homme n’aura plus serieusement en face de lui que lui-meme, et plus qu’un monde entierement refait de sa main a son idee – et je doute qu’a ce moment il puisse se reposer pour jouir de son œuvre, et juger que cette œuvre etait bonne. » " Un livre qui aurait constitue le moins cher et le plus envoutant des cadeaux de Noel pour un jeune lecteur (une jeune lectrice) soucieux de s’abstraire des realites pesantes et des perspectives utilitaires.
