About the Book

This lengthy discography is a supplementary volume to NOVELTY RECORDS: SELECTED SUBJECTS AND ARTISTS (Paw Paw Press, 2015). It profiles more than 2,000 novelty releases. This investigation of novelty tunes spans more than a century of American recording history. It is organized alphabetically according to individual song titles and by specific topical themes. That is, the text features single novelty hits arranged from "ape call" to "zombie jamboree" as well as selected groups of novelty tunes under general themes ranging from "alcohol use and abuse" to "zombies and other creatures of the night". The authors have created a distinctive listing approach that highlights major novelty songs and key novelty themes with capital letters. Additional novelty recordings are also listed in lower case letters. These latter non-capitalized releases are regarded as either answer songs to previous novelty releases or follow-up, supportive topical novelty tunes. In all cases, though, this discography provides a broad survey of novelty recordings released between 1900 and 2015.
