Sicchè essendo già Lionora di età di anni XV, e andando il di di San Giovanni a vedere la festa, e ritrovandosi Ippolito, il quale era di anni xvlll, in San Giovanni, venne a saltar agli occhi la fanciulla, la quale per avventura guardava lui, e così come si scontrarono con la vista degli occhi, si punsero il cuore di amo roso desire; in tal maniera, che prima si par tissero qui del tempio, l'uno e l'altro fortemente s'innamorarono, e più volte, col suo guardarsi onesto, si dimostrarono i loro amori esser pa rimente rispondenti. Il quale non conoscendo lei, nè ella lui, molto loro si accendeva il deside rio di stare insieme e conoscersi. Di che par tendosi Lionnra con la sua compagnia, Ippolito la seguiva onestamente, intanto che lui conobbe lei essere figliuola de' suoi capitali nemici. La fanciulla all' entrare in casa si voltò occulta mente, e guardato il giovane con un amoroso in chino, pigliata licenza dalle sue care compagne, se ne andò in casa, e fattosi alla finestra, vedendo Ippolito, domandò una sua vicina chi lui fosse. Inteso che lui era figliuolo di messer Buondelmon ti, di quella cosa ella fu molto dolente e partita dalla finestra, se ne andò in camera, dolendosidella fortuna. E quanto era pm impossibile il vedersi Spesso, tanto cresceva maggiormente l'amore da ogni parte per modo che alcuna volta la infelice Lionora, rinchiusa nella sua camera sola e lamentandosi d'amore, così di ceva: O crudelissima fortuna nemica d' ogni mio piacere, come soll'riresti tu tante pene? Perchè non umilii tu i cuori dei nostri padri? Perchè quell' amore che è fra noi, non è fra loro? Oh spietata sorte ob duro caso, perchè tanta asprezza. Perchè tanta crudeltà nei cuori dei nostri padri? Perchè l'antica inimicizia e le an tiche discordie nacquero tra i nostri passati? Perchè ora non si estinguono? Che tanto fuoco quanto è il mio almeno si potesse dividerlo. Ed in simili e altre addolorata parole, la valorosa fan cinlla la notte e il giorno con lacrime si consu mava. Ippolito, che non era punto con meno fuoco di lei, senza dire alcuna parola, conoscendo non poter vedere quella che lui sempre teneva scolpita nel suo cuore, di dolore e di malinconia tutto si cosumava, per modo che ogni piacere gli era tornato in tedio, e abbandonati tutti i suoi amici, poco usciva di camera; anzi sempre senza alcuna consolazione, si stava nel letto bestem miandola crudel disposizione de'fati, maledicendo la perfida inimicizia paterna. Ahi fiero e crudo amore, ingrato di tanta umiltà quanta è stata la mia, che il primo giorno ch'io ti piacqui mi sotto.
