Nouvelles asiatiques . Les Nouvelles asiatiques sont un recueil de l'écrivain français Joseph Arthur de Gobineau, paru en 1876 et régulièrement réédité. Par asiatiques, il faut entendre orientales et spécialement persanes. Gobineau a été premier secrétaire de la légation française en Perse (aujourd'hui l'Iran) de 1854 à 1863, et y a brillamment réussi en s'intégrant à cette société très différente de son pays d'origine. Les Nouvelles asiatiques de l'édition originale recouvre le tome II de l'édition Pauvert (le tome I correspond au recueil Souvenirs de Voyage). Les deux tomes sont chacun composés de six nouvelles: le tome I contient Scaramouche, La Chasse au caribou, Akrivie Phrangopoulo, Mademoiselle Irnois, Le Mouchoir rouge et Adélaïdes; le tome II: contient La danseuse de Shamakha (Caucase), L'illustre magicien (Perse), Histoire de Gambèr-Aly (Perse), La guerre des Turcomans (Perse), Les amants de Kandahar (Afghanistan) et La vie de voyage (Turquie de l'est). Dans la préface du tome II, Gobineau vante le roman Hadjy-Baba du romancier Morier tout en lui faisant une critique: en voulant rendre compte du tempérament persan, l'usage de la forme du roman a limité le propos de Morier à une unique figure, alors que le recueil de nouvelles, tel un bijou à facettes, permet de multiplier les points de vue sur la société persane.

Il doit sa notoriété posthume à son Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines (1853-1855), qui le range parmi les pères de la pensée racialiste. Il est également l'auteur d'une oeuvre littéraire romantique, d'essais polémiques et de travaux historiques et philologiques sur l'Iran ancien.La jeunesse (1816-1849) Arthur de Gobineau est né dans une famille de noblesse de robe d'origine bordelaise. Son arrière-grand-père et son grand-père ont exercé des charges à la Cour des aides de Guyenne et au Parlement de Bordeaux. Son père, Louis de Gobineau, étant cadet, fit une carrière militaire, et se compromit sous l'Empire pour ses sympathies légitimistes sa participation à l'évasion de Polignac en 1813 lui valut d'être emprisonné à Sainte-Pélagie, dont il ne fut libéré qu'à la Restauration (1814). À Bruxelles auprès du roi durant les Cent-Jours, il est nommé à son retour capitaine d'infanterie de la Garde royale.
